Red Wing, Mn. To Louisiana, Mo. On the Mississippi River

Got my friends Kings Craft 44' house boat launched this morning. It's been since mid May that we started work on it to get ready for the 508 mile trip south. We replaced the SB Perkins 6.354 engine & the 7.5 generator with a 4.107 Perkins for power that had been removed by the po. All rubber hoses were replaced along with new Marelon thru hull valves, all new battery cables, shafts & props removed, sent to a shop to be checked and repair as needed and much more. Got into the slip & lines on then wanted to start gen to check operation & the starter boned out, we had it running on the ground before setting back into boat. We were planning on heading south Friday morning but may have to wait on a starter repair. The good news is that both mains started & ran fine a little more smoke out of the SB while cold than the port. Transmission shift & engage properly.

Sounds like you are almost good to go.

I'm sure there are lots of places to effect repair along the mississippi.

Get her going and enjoy the trip.

I have done the Mississippi from Cairo to Louisiana. By the way with Perkins 6.354's.
NOT many places to stop if you are looking for marinas. Fuel at Memphis, and two stops in Miss. Natchez being one.
Lots of places to anchor.
STAY BETWEEN THE AIDS TO NAVIGATION and you will be ok, recall all of the rock dykes, many are under water or not much water going over them.
On the entire lower Miss. we saw TWO PLEASURE BOATS that was several weeks of travel.

I knew that I had an article adjunct to the list and found it:

The Ultimate List Raises Delivery Trips To New Level

So you have purchased the boat of your dreams and now you have to get it home. Reality sets in! Or, you are going to assist a friend to do the same. I have done both often, and as a result, came up with the following checklist some years ago. As an aside, I tell my friends that I’ll work for food on boat deliveries!
Remember this exercise is a first impression of the boat, you know little if anything about its quirks and idiosyncrasies. There is but one way to learn the specifics of a used boat and that is to have a long talk with the owner, preferably on board, with a note pad in hand. In addition I ALWAYS insist on spending one night on the boat (at the dock) after the purchase agreement is signed and BEFORE the survey and sea trial. After all you have put up a substantial deposit and you are not going anywhere so the owner should not object. If so, you still have an opportunity to walk away from the deal. Spending the night aboard will give you ample time to get the “feel” of the boat and to run every system. And, I mean everything including the genset with all systems turned on for hours and not just 20 minutes or so. You get the picture. In fact, an engine surveyor had missed a bad bearing in a diesel generator and I discovered it as a result of my running the genset over night.

During this time on board you are not sipping Mint Juleps or hot toddies but are diligently mapping the: Fuel system including all lines, valves, tanks and manifold.
Fuel filters and what it takes to change them. (You will change
them before you leave).
Water system including tanks, valves, pump, strainers, input
valves, etc.
Sewer system, tanks pumps, head and how all of it works.

The bottom line is that you are putting the boat and yourself through the paces and “ communing” with each other!!!!!
Note please, that "checking" is not sufficient, you must be familiar with all systems so that you are not trying to figure it out on a dark and stormy night! Which brings up another caveat: do not plan to run at night on a delivery trip unless an offshore passage is required and then every item in this list is checked twice and much more added. This list is in no way comprehensive, but is a starting point for the type boat and the exigencies of the contemplated voyage.
I have had more than one or two exclaim that there is a lot of “stuff” on this list. Yes, that is true but what do you want to be without in the middle of_________, fill in the blank, and it is a dark and stormy night?

Did the sea trial today, went pretty good F/B helm needs rebuilt is the only problem, got the shaft log packing adjusted temp running is 94f. We will provision tomorrow do laundry & start downriver Monday unless Jim decides to stay here & order a seal kit to fix the helm pump. Went thru L&D #3 to Treasure Island topped off the fuel tanks then back south to the top end of Pepin lake & then returned to Ole Mis marina, having grilled porterhouse steaks, tomatoes & corn on the cob for dinner. Right after a scotch & water:-)

Keep us posted Ron. Where are you going to wrap up in Louisiana? What are the plans for the vessel afterwards?

Louisiana, Missouri is north of St. Louis about 65 miles. It's going to be 508 a river mile trip:-) . After he gets it back home I know he is planning on having it painted plus several other upgrades, he just sold a 35' Kings Craft that was a very well kept boat.

Another step back, it has a plug in the center of the hull near the transom that had a tiny seep. My friend in trying to stop it made it much worse now we have a haul out & welding scheduled for 8:00 am tomorrow. He is not very mechanical (could bend a crowbar in a sand pile) I've given up offering advice on anything because he won't take it, so I'am just watching with a smile as he goes like he's killing snakes messing with things that don't need to be bothered with. I'am starting to just want this over with. Stay tuned

Wet patch is possible without haul out. Red Hand two part epoxy or SPLASH ZONE.
I keep the latter on hand all the time. Can be applied to a leak-----wet.

Many boats owe extended lives to SplashZone. "Nothin as permanent as a temporary repair"

You left Red Wing on Thursday afternoon, it's Friday night (Saturday morn actually) I would guess you make 80 miles a day with locks and a bit of luck in a big houseboat. 3.5 x 80 = 280 miles. Mi 780 - 280 = the Quad Cities maybe, that would put you in my neighborhood m.o.l. Hope things are going well. Let me know if you need anything landslide, I can help. If your in the area, be careful of the lateral dams from about a half mile above the I-80 bridge to L&D 14 and the other about 4 miles below L&D 14 to about a half mile above L&D 15. They are unique to this area and are a bad hazard the uninformed, as they are marked poorly. Hope things are going well.

We went thru the Keokuc lock at noon today (sat) lost the SB engine awhile ago, antifreeze in the exhaust. We had a short day Thursday because L&D #15 was closed from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, we got thru at 4:30 & stayed at Sunset marina. We've been getting 70 to 80 miles a day except for Sunday & Thursday, planning on Quincy this afternoon & then 44 miles to Two Rivers & my boat, houseboats are ok but I like a boat that looks like a boat:-)

Sounds like your making good time. How fast you running? I was probably down at the boat when you passed on Thursday. I was in the process of pulling my fishing boat out of the water for the season. The big boat will come out in a couple of weeks, but I want a chance to enjoy the great late season weather we have been having, and I want to run and get more experience with the new four blade props before I pull her for the winter. I think I got real lucky and found near perfection on Ebay for a deal. Sorry to hear about your engine loss. I guess if it had to go at least it was near home and not yours or your expense to make it live again. Did you have any trouble getting into or out of Sunset Thursday night. They have a serious problem with mud and shallow water. It is generally worst just before you get into the harbor and still in the river. Water is up a few inches right now. I know what you mean about a boat needs to look like a boat. I have rented a couple of houseboats in the past and other than space I didn't think they offered much. Was this your first pass on the river above Dubuque? Take any pictures? Most folks are totally clueless as to how pretty the Mississippi is up there.

Last night there was a large (40' or so) trawler tied up at Marquis Harbor in Moline. I couldn't see it well from the road but looked to be a Kady Krogan or something similar. Did you by chance see it? There are many interesting boats headed down river this time of year. I think most summer in the Twin Cities.
