Charlie!
Very well done and congrats on your splash and ongoing restoration. You got one hell of a lot of work done there to get on the "road"!!!! Off and running. Good to get out of the city and on up north. Will keep in touch and hope to be cruising up in your parts someday. Meanwhile will follow your restoration! Be well. Bruce/Patience

Thank you Bruce, I definitely have a sense of accomplishment getting to this point. I look forward to seeing your improvements too.
One step at time…

Charlie, Definitely will keep in touch. Got a bit sidelined with burned through Exhaust Elbow and Manifold.... another day, another challenge and solution!

Congrats Charlie! I did the same trip in the opposite direction, it's a great trip. And I stayed at Chipman's for a night. Great no-frills family place. Is there a tentative opening day for the canal? Doesn't seem like this winter was particularly bad, so hopefully you won't be delayed too long. Keep the pics coming. West Point is an amazing site from the water, especially if you understand its strategic location at the bend in the river.

May 20th is scheduled opening day for the canals.

Good news, hope it doesn't get delayed. Be careful of debris in the water especially at the very start of the season. Pieces of wood, floating and submerged are not uncommon. We started our trip south as soon as the canal opened a few years back. Our scheduled trip was delayed a few weeks due to unusually high water from melting snow that year keeping the canal closed. That likely contributed to the debris problem.

Looks like you're having a good trip so far! The rest of the run up the Hudson is absolutely beautiful, so you should be in for a good trip.

As far as the mentions of canal debris, I'll second that. I'm not sure if the Champlain gets as bad as the Erie, but we've yet to have a trip into the canals where I haven't seen at least some debris and had at least 1 thud from bouncing something off the hull. Every time the thud has been something submerged enough that it wasn't visible before or after impact (fortunately I've gotten lucky and they've always either bounced to the side or hit the keel and bounced down and missed the props).

I'm definitely not wanting to be first to go up the canal, we've got the single with keel protection . We are just hoping to be on the lake by memorial day.

Thanks

If all goes well I will hit the canal late June ,on my way to Burlington to visit my daughter. I would live to meet up any with TF members.

You'll be fine don't worry too much. We also have a single with some protection. We had 1 underwater bump of something in the canal, probably a submerged log. No damage or concern really and I suspect you won't be going too fast anyway. Enjoy the trip, just be alert and you'll be fine. I think we were in the canal not more than a week after it opened and it wasn't too bad even after the unusual high water level that drags a lot of debris into the lake.

So you have a bunch of time to get from where you are now up to the first lock. Will you just do a slow and leisurely cruise, or leave the boat somewhere along the way and then come back? Or stop and do projects along the way until the locks open?

T.T.
Goal for here is finish up a couple projects, get some experience driving the boat,
We will probably move upriver closer to the canals in Mid May. Probably work our way to the lake over a few weekends. We still work full time, but I can usually work in 3 day weekends.
I am super relieved that she ran beautifully on our first run.

Even though this marina has protection from wind and waves there were at least 2 foot seas rolling through here last night. My new dock lines took a beating.

Great day today though.

You made good progress the first day. Not to push it but you could be on the lake in a long weekend if you wanted. You should take your time and enjoy, but it won't take a lot of hours to get to the canal from where you are. Time the tides if you can. The Hudson has tidal currents all the way yo Albany and beyond. Weather this time of year is fluky as you know. The week ahead doesn't look great but then you might get a good stretch in the 70's one weekend. Regardless you have plenty of time at this point especially if the boat is running well with no major issues to deal with. Good luck!
