Varnishing

Has anyone varnished over recently applied Cetol oil and how did the finish look? I recognize the "right way" is to sand down to clean wood "but" this is a new boat and I'm looking for an easier approach if it makes sense. Thanks

Never put a varnish over Cetol but I always used Cetol High Gloss, as varnish. Maybe Cetol make a straight oil I`ve not seen.

I have varnished over Cetol Light on interior pieces of teak. The Cetol gave me the color / tint that I wanted. I then coated with Epifans rubbed effect to match the existing teak. It worked well. You have not given us a lot of information as to what you are trying to accomplish. However If you have a good base of Cetol now, why not put a few coats of Cetol clear gloss over it as recommended by Cetol?

Thanks to everyone for your responses. Our boat is new and looks great but I really like the glossy look of Varnish. Since the boat is garaged, I'm not concerned with the sun. I will look into the Cetol product to add the finish I'm looking for and see how that turns out. Thanks again.

No sanding is needed with the Cetol Gloss. If you do choose to sand between coats you can achieve the same results / finish as you would with varnish. 3 coats of Cetol Natural Teak or Cetol light and 3 coats of gloss will get you a maintenance free finish for 2-3 years in New England. Friends and I were just talking about Marshall Catboats today. Nice boat. Good luck

So how is the day sailing going? Where have you been sailing to? Are you enjoy your sailing lessons?

Sailing is still technically on hold as we await warmer weather and find someone to train us. Still planning on using the boat with motor to get use to the trailer and launching and just having fun. Inquiring into the Nordhavn 56MS is just staying in touch with PAE. Dan advised no plans for a smaller MS so time will tell what our next move may be. Right now I’m still thinking a possible small or midsize PH sailboat or MS or even a Catamaran? All options are on the table but for now it’s the Sandpiper and looking for ways to add to her classic great looks. Life is too short not to own some type of boat.

Varnish ain’t “Easy”
Sand it off to bare wood and varnish.
Or Cetol away, the gloss stuff looks pretty good , I M O .

This is the only way to go. Love varnish but is a pain. Choose your base Cetol and finish up with gloss. Looks great and lasts way longer than varnish.
