Any tips or suggestions for preping and painting galvanized metal?

FF, I use Pettit 6980 or 6981 to prime galvanized metal. The stuff sticks like crazy. Here is a link to the 6981: Pettit Marine Paints - Browse Catalog

6980 seems to be the same stuff in a different can. If it gets on you, get it off quick. If it drys you'll have to wait for it to wear off.

Not sure what your painting but we always wipe with a vinegar soaked rag then prime and paint like normal. Works we'll.

Had success applying, by brush, an etch primer (may need 2 coats) to the clean galvanized surface, followed by single pack epoxy gloss paint. BruceK

zinc chromate primer is a good self etching primer to start with.
