Bigger is better. If you check the manufacturer's website, they will specify the largest through hull size or flow rate.

Going to a larger size reduces the vacuum effect on the strainer screen. The larger the screen, the smaller the volume going through each individual hole. English translation: objects such as seaweed or a plastic bag are more likely to slide by as opposed to being sucked against the screen.

To wonder further into the weeds, if you keep your internal strainers in place, you can use larger holed perforated sheet metal to reduce each individual hole to an almost absence of vacuum. The larger size holes block almost everything and the smaller holes in your internal strainer basket take care of the rest.

This is what I use:

It's 5/32 holes on 3/16 centers. The open area (area of the holes) is over 60% of the surface area.

Here's a piece of what I use:

If you want more information, just ask.

Thanks, i just ordered all 3 same size the large ones 4.5" x10"
hope thats big enough?

They also make those in a slotted version. I figure that may be less clog prone than the hole style (but more stuff will make it to the internal strainers).

i will go with the holes. Because here in long island( south shore) we get alot of heavy seagrass mid-summer... AC is first pick up that gets clogged. I bought the 4.5 x 10, hopefully that will be enough

In my experience, the screen vs slot is LESS likely to clog.

It may get civered, but most falls off if suction is stopped or it it doesnt fall off, it will if hit with a brush, etc.
