In prepping the bottom for paint, I discovered a patch from what it appear a through-hull or transducer was removed and the Gelcoat layer was peeling off. I took my sander and cleaned it up. The patch itself appears to be in good shape and not sure why the Gelcoat lost it's grip. Any suggestion for applying Gelcoat so this doesn't happen again?

Might be that the patch is epoxy resin...polyester doesn't like to stick to cured epoxy. If that happens to be the case, you could paint on a thin coat of epoxy, and then apply the gelcoat while the epoxy is still "open"...thumb print tack.

No need for gelcoat below the waterline, it’ll be covered by the bottom paint.
Just apply barrier coat per manufacturers instructions, then bottom paint.

+1. That is how I do it.

I have used Interlux Interprotect on many boats and never had any problems. Just follow the manufacturers recommendations. They will figure out how many gallons of paint to use based on the boat dimensions. Just keep putting on coats until the oaint is used up.
