Can anybody tell me if they use a gasket sealant when replacing gaskets on the raw water system on a Caterpillar engine. 375 hp.

I'm talking heat exchanger end plates, transmission cooler etc.

They most likely need no sealant.

But for gaskets that I know I might need to reuse, say like on a raw water impeller cover, I seal one side of the gasket with Permatex #2 and lube the other side of the gasket with Super Lube.

That way the Permatex side stays stuck to the impeller cover while the Super Lube side comes free without tearing the gasket.

you should not have any issues using an automotive sealant.

Just my penny's worth.
I use Hylomar, it was specifically developed by Rolls Royce for surface mating gaskets.
Use evenly & lightly on clean dry gasket surfaces, pay particular attention to torque settings and order of tightening.
I've never had a failure yet.

You mean other than the fact that most people use to much and the sealant ends up squeezed out the seams and into places it shouldn't go? :D

Well true, but you must be trained in the art of sealant.....(5200 is a totally differ subject for me!!)
