Bottom paint, do it yourself or hire a pro?

I don't recommend painting the shafts, props or rudders. After you get it back in the salt have a diver go down twice a year and clean the bottom and check the zinks.
If taking that approach need to do it every month in our part of the world.
 
Got the old Egg on the hard around 11. Removed the rotten swim step brackets. Also got the exhaust rings off and all cleaned up so we can fix that little leak. Props are polished, need to clean shafts next. Started in on sanding, but my favorite sander let me down around two hours into it.
I should have the bottom sanded by the end of tomorrow!

That our use the boat. It is difficult for stuff to grow if the boat never sits still long enough.
 
Got everything sanded down. Put on a coat of Primocon and the first coat of bottom paint. Fair bit of work as the port side needed to be stripped down to glass for the first foot down. I thinks it looks dam good if I do say so for myself.

Now my next problem is how to seal this up.
The old way was Oakum and boat life.

About a 1/4 of the exhaust port sits in the water. I'm thinking Sikaflex?

Is there a plate that goes around it?

Yes a bronze ring, currently being used as a templet for a stainless one.
But its just a ring, fits tight around the pipe, screws to the transom.
 
I think that I would put something like oakum in first to stop the caulking from falling into the gap. Then Sika would be good.
 
What's the pipe sticking out made of?
 
Fiberglass exhaust pipe

I would be apprehensive about filling the large gap with sealant like Sikaflex.

Since it's fiberglass, I would fill the space between pipe and hull with epoxy filler. Then bond the pipe to the hull with fiberglass fabric and epoxy.

Install the trim ring.


The other way would be to cut the fiberglass tube shorter, install a flanged exhaust outlet and connect the tube to the outlet with a short length of exhaust hose.

Second coat paint s complete!
Going to have the blocks moved tomorrow. Then I will have better access to the swim step.
Also fixed the trim tabs today!

We use Sea barrier 3000
Its supposedly about as good as it gets
40 litres went on

Carboline | Product Details

Composition:
thiram carbamate-dithiocarbamate active 44.0 g/ l
copper present as cuprous oxide mineral-copper active 764.0 g/ l

Compared to say, Jotun Seavictor 50

Composition:
4, 5-dichloro-2-n-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one ungrouped active 36.0 g/ l;
copper present as cuprous oxide mineral-copper active 603.0 g/ l

Completely foreign to us over here. We are all about the Interlux and Pettit products. Maybe we are using consumer grade stuff? I will say the Pettit Trinidad Pro is good stuff but it is not cheap. And we usually rate our paints in percentage of concetration and not parts per liter. I think Pettit Trinidad is 60% Copper....

764 g/litre is pretty much 76.4%

Bottom pic was the time before and was dived about 4 mths prior

That is good stuff!!! And I didn't know grams and milliliters were the same in this application....one being weight, and the other volume. Now you are getting into the English way of doing things...."fluid" grams???!!! :rofl: :rofl: :rofl:

I mean seriously, that assumes everything in the bucket weighs exactly the same for the volume that they displace....and I seriously doubt that with copper. Is this a correct statment?? I thought the purpose of the metric system(other than simplicity of tens) was to keep units of weight and units of volume separate....whereas the English systems struggles with that....hence "fluid ounces" versus the weight of an ounce.
"Solids be weight" of That Trinidad is 84%. Now whether all of those solids are copper, I do not know. But something tells me that is the case.

Us Americans don't need no stinkin' metric system.

We resisted and fought off the metric system in the 70's only to have it sneaked into our lives slowly.

7 days for us to Wash/buff/wax/fix exhaust pipe leaks, fab and install new swim step brackets. Strip one side and the aft, prime and 3 coats of paint. Maiden shake down run was from Everett-Seattle and back so about 110 NM and 75 gallons of fuel doing a solid 17kt each way. And today was about another 35 miles from Everett to Honeymoon bay and back. But we took it slow at 12kt and only 35 gallons.

Nice looking Egg Harbor.

I always liked the lines on East Coast boats like Egg Harbor, Pacemaker and lobster boats like Wilburs.
 
You started bottom painting at the wrong end this time! Reverse direction is always slower in a boat!!

Are you sure your fuel consumption figures are correct. 110 NM at 75 gallons equals 1.46 NM/gallon doing 17 knots. Doing 12 knots you only got 1 NM/gallon. Is that correct?

BTW, the boat looks great!
