Any good leads on having a decent V-Berth mattress made? Not looking for ultra cheap, but not overly expensive either.

Thoughts?

Handcraft Mattress tells a good story on their website. Lots of options. We looked at replacing ours (previous boat) via a local dealer... but got sidetracked, different boat now...

There have been at least two long "mattress" threads, one here and one on CF, that you might find useful...

We have used one from Amazon in our last 2 boats. It is an 8” memory foam mattress. Price is about $200 for a queen. Then cut it to size and shape with an electric knife. We think it is very comfortable.

We have a mattress that we spent close to $2,000 for at home. ( I can’t believe I spent that on a mattress) We both sleep better on the 4 inch memory foam on the boat.

I used Mattress Insider.com. https://www.mattressinsider.com/custom-size-mattresses.html

Honestly, they were great. Made a template out of heavy paper for my odd shaped master SR mattress. They made a custom 10" memory foam mattress for me which has a nice finished covering on it. It's very comfortable and fits perfectly. I even had them make me two sets of fitted bottom sheets. All in was around $800. Very happy with them and would certainly use them again.

We used Portland Mattresses in Portland Maine. Not cheap, but exceptional quality.

We bought from them two years ago and have boating friends that bought from them last year. All of us have been thrilled with their products. We sleep wonderfully on our boat. The offer superb quality, perfect fit and clever features like the hinge that they'll put where ever you want it on the mattress. The hinge on ours makes servicing our aft vacuflush pump really easy.

Any marine or auto upholstery shop should be able to make one. It's a simple process. Select the hardness/density of the foam you prefer, thickness of any memory foam if you want it, select the fabric, and they do the rest. Ours were well under a thousand.

I just did new one in my bunk, and used bob o pedic memory foam 6 inch, and only had to cut a small corner of down by my feet, and we have the exact same bunk,I love mine, twin size fits perfectly into the bunk just one little slice,I used electric carving knife

Like Dave says, memory foam and an electric knife.

I could not find any "marine" mattress companies in my area but I found a custom mattress company about 100 miles from home. I took them my V berth cushions and they duplicated the size and shape in 7" mattress foam. Of course, they covered it like a "real" mattress.

I am very happy I did this and sleep well on it.

So, use the Internet to find a supplier near you.

Just went through this exercise. Memory foam doesn't work for me. I feel like I slowly sink into a pit and have to climb out. Latex is nice but expensive. Wasn't willing to spend almost $4500 for the two mattresses ($2200 ea). Plus they are really tall mattresses.

In the end, I went old school with a twist. 4" firm hi-density foam with 2-inch foam laminated on top. I actually think 3" of firm would be fine. Had it covered in sunbrella. About $1800. I've had this done before and found it very comfortable but I like a firm mattress.

BTW - I haven't receive yet, but I just ordered custom sheets off Etsy. About $170 per set (fitted, flat, and two pillowcases for each side). There was some sort of discount that brought it down to that.

Peter,

If memory foam is too soft for you, you don’t have enough arthritis…

It feels good for about 15-minutes. As a matter of fact, it feels great for 5-minutes. And then I sink and by morning, I feel like I've slept in a hammock and my back hurts, which is not normal for me. Maybe I'm too fat. I have a firm traditional mattress with a 2-inch memory foam top from Costco. That's about right.

BTW - I have an electric carving knife. It only works so-so on cutting foam. Works better on first cut. Not so great on trimming. But that's sort of par for the course. Same with cutting wood or fabric. Better to get it right the first time. Clean-up sometimes gets ragged.

My electric knife works pretty well except when doing thick mattresses. It doesn’t reach all the way through so I have to cut from both sides. I have gotten fairly good at guessing where to have the 2 cuts meet in the middle.

As to sleeping on a memory foam mattress, that is just about all I can spend a night on. On a regular mattress I can sleep about 2 hours and then the pain wakes me up. At home I actually have a memory foam mattress with a memory foam topper on it. I would have a topper on the boat except it would make the mattress too high.
