When will the Erie canal open

I am seeing that many locks in the Erie canal are scheduled, tentatively, to open on July 4th. I also understand that a lock or two are under repair. Does anyone on the forum have any insight? Trying to move a boat in New York back to Lake Erie.

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

These 2 pages are the last official info that was published on opening. Based on what's there, a full transit won't happen until mid-August. I expect we'll know more as July 4th approaches.

The Notice to Mariners is the best resource.
You can sign up and get updates as they are issued.
The tentative s schedule shows Aug 10th as the earliest you can get through E12. There likely to be quite a backlog and heavy traffic from Wayerford headed west.

I spoke with the man who updates this page on the NY canal website yesterday. As of yesterday passage to Lake Erie from the Hudson could be completed on August 10th. I asked if he felt this cold be moved up some and he indicated it was very possible. He said to monitor the notice to mariners page frequently as things are changing all the time. I sense that August 10th is a worst case date, but who knows. If this virus goes sideways the canal likely won't open at all. Hello SL Seaway.

Last I heard StL Seaway wascakso closed to recreational traffic!?

Also... you can sign up for the NY Canal Notice to Mariners and you will automatically receive updates when they are posted. Very helpful when travelling to avoid surprises.

It's re-opened bit by bit over the last couple of weeks, just with some limitations. Last locks re-opened to recreational traffic yesterday I think. There are still US/Canada border concerns though.

Thank you everyone for your input. It doesn't appear that they update the Notices very often, though. Both pages seem to have last been updated in mid-May.

There are new notices coming out frequently but many will deal with minor/ local items. The maint / opening schedule has not been updated since published.
Individual licks may close periodically due to me hsnical / electrical issues and water levels may vary in sections and its useful knowing if you are in that area and traveling.

NY Canals just issued several NTM that detail operating dates & times. Looks like a few new details from prior schedule but not a big change for those trying to transit any distances.
