RE: What does your boat look like?

The venerable Ed Monk designed Marine Trader / CHB / Sea Chief 34, a 1976, also known as a poor man's Grand Banks 36.

Happy with the design but not the*construction,*so recored the decks, recored a good portion of*the*house, then*basically built a new*outer shell of fiberglass over the old boat.* Replaced huge amounts of rotted balsa and substandard Marine Plywood the original builders used.

Reinforced, strengthend, and improved where I could.*

Rewired and replumbed most everything.

Being in the Midwest, and getting ready for winter,*planning to***replace the fuel tanks and recore the transom next year and then I'll be ready to hit the water again after four years of restoration (prospective buyers of older Taiwanese trawlers take note -- this is what it takes)

If you've got questions about doing major structural replairs on old Taiwanese tubs*using convential*amatuer tools I'll be happy to help if I can, there isn't much I haven't been into in one way or another.

This picture is from before I started, right now the boat's pretty darn ugly, with multiple colors of fiberglass filler....

Alan

RE: What does your boat look like?

CALYPSO is a Grand Banks 42 Classic model built of wood in 1972 in Hong Kong.* I bought her in August 1986 in San Diego and lived aboard there from Jun 1987 until April 1990 when I transported the boat to Galveston and then moved it on its own bottom to Panama City, FL.

Many modifications and improvements followed over the years, but the one I like best is the "pilot bench" for two I had built at the lower station where there had previously been no place to sit.* It proved its worth on last year's 2400-mile trip up the Tenn-Tom waterway and the Tennessee River.

RE: What does your boat look like?

Mine's a Halvorsen Gourmet Cruiser 32 (with flybridge option) which is due to deliver in about a month. By chance, the builders have chosen a yard just 2 hours away from my home in Hong Kong, so I get to see her under construction about once every 4-6 weeks. She's quite a deviation from the standard boat, not least with a 2' hull extension which gives a larger aft ****pit.

My avatar is*a quick*effort (scissors'n glue collage from the builders' marketing materials) to show what my extended hull with flybridge should look like.

Can't wait!....

And attached is a photo of the Halvorsen Island Gypsy 44 (much like Gil's above)*that I grew up on, and still get to see on occasion. In the foreground is my 28' Sea Ray Sundancer which I just sold to make way for my new*Halvo Gourmet Cruiser currently under construction.
