There are drawbridges, lift bridges, swing (rotating) bridges, and then there are (now you don't see them) submersible bridges:

Same running the Loop, there are huge lowerable walls that fold down to the bottom.

In low water there up to save water , in floods its weird to pass 1/2 mile NEXT to a lock!
 
I don't know what you're saying, but there are plenty of strange bridges that you should prepare for on the East Coast.
