B have no issue with your post #89. As mentioned above assuming the presence of transceivers and people monitoring the VHF continue to believe the tech currently exists for both to survive. At least in my area the whales are closely observed as are the great whites. Agree a plan to mitigate impact for all parties (including the whales) is possibly doable. Obviously the tracking of recreational vessels without AIS would be more problematic. We have a fair number of foreign flagged vessels transiting. Although English is supposed to be understood sometimes it’s not. Even then high speed craft could intervene and present a barrier to a pod.
PS am I correct in assuming the expense of monitoring all the craft (A/B AIS and non AIS) would be quite expensive? Whereas a simple program could tract risks in real time if everyone had transceivers?
Today we went Melville RI to port Jeff. Easy day with great visibility. Would estimate more than half of the vessels observed were only seen and many were very small targets on radar. Few were small skiffs or center consoles.
