What's in Catalina that's so fun?

Two Harbors:
Swimming, paddle boarding, kayaking, fishing, spearfishing, SCUBA diving, freediving, hiking, sitting on your deck watching bald eagles fish, dinghy rides, drinking a buffalo milk at the bar, dancing to live music on the deck. And then there's Buccaneer Days....

Avalon:
Pretty much same as Two Harbors, but you can add shopping, renting a golf cart to explore on land, nature jeep tour, zip lining, bicycling, dining out.

Catalina is a beautiful place with mountains, clear blue water and blue skies.

We would go to Cat Harbor from LA. It is the only all weather harbor on the island. At Two Harbors, the water cops do not board you and put dye into your head(s). I asked one of them why and he said the "flush" (pun intended) is so much better there.Could be why the Opaleyes were so much bigger there than Avalon.

For the next trip, you could consider prepositioning the boat at Dana Point or Huntington for a shorter run across with those less comfy at sea.

Update: After picking up another friend in Avalon and doing the town thing, we went up to Emerald Cove - had a great day but got hit by a rare SE swell overnight which was a bit too much for our trusty flop stopper. Retreated to Cat Harbor for a few wonderful days, and now anchored at Little Harbor, one of my favorite places in the world, for our last couple nights. Easter egg hunt on the beach coming up!
