S. Carolina’s State Bird: horsefly?

So what’s with all the giant horseflies this year? I don’t recall them from last year, are they seasonal? I swear I killed one this morning that was so big it had numbers on its wings!

Those are the snowflies that don’t head north to Long Island until late July and early August.

I can live with horse flies. The green heads are the ones to be feared. A horse fly is looking for a sip of blood. Green heads want a piece of meat.

Long Island has the green fly. They draw blood. I have a closed cabin with ac. We don’t open windows or doors until we are anchored and the engine is off. They are attracted to exhaust and vibration.
