Robertson AP experience?

I have an old Robertson. Runs like a sweetheart from the remote in the flybridge.
But, touch the knob in the pilothouse, and it'll wander all over the place. I think the heading command read off the knob is noisy, and that gives the system a random command to follow.
Anybody know about repairing that?

What is the model number of the helm control panel (AP10, AP20, etc.)? Most were very popular and reliable. Easy to find good used helm control panels on Ebay and elsewhere.

Swap the control heads over and see if that is the issue.
