Ad hominem
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ad hominem (Latin for "to the person"), short for argumentum ad hominem, typically refers to a fallacious argumentative strategy whereby genuine discussion of the topic at hand is avoided by instead attacking the character, motive, or other attribute of the person making the argument, or persons associated with the argument, rather than attacking the substance of the argument itself.

The term ad hominem is applied to several different types of arguments, most of which are fallacious. The valid types of ad hominem arguments are generally only encountered in specialist philosophical usage and typically refer to the dialectical strategy of using the target's own beliefs and arguments against them while not assenting to the validity of those beliefs and arguments.

The most common form of ad hominem fallacy is "A makes a claim a, B asserts that A holds a property that is unwelcome, and hence B concludes that argument a is wrong".

I thought fallatio ad hominem meant something else.
I guess I've been social distanced too long.

Oh and glad to see you back here Mr. X

Good to see you back, Xsbank!! And from Pender no less. Love Pender a great spot to restock at the IGA and BC Liquors. Hope to get back this fall enroute to Chatterbox.
Stay well, stay curmudgeonly!!

303 aerospace protectant will keep them looking good for longer. It’s a UV blocker.

You can buy those knobs very cheaply at McMaster-Carr.

I decided to take the McMaster Carr route to replace the Hynautic parts. Since the SS was 303 I decided to go plastic. Based on my research phenolic has more UV resistance. So that's the choice I made. Total cost with tax and shipping was $52USD for eight knobs.

Downside to phenolic in my size (3/8 fine thread) is the use of a metal insert. I'll either use Boeshield, Superlube, or a dielectric grease on the threads to guard against corrosion.

I'll have them installed next week and I'll report back at some time in the future.

A can of clear spray paint, with UV protectant, will make the repair last in the weather.

I painted the twin engine round 'plastic' control knobs on my Morse controls with Rustoleum Spray paint.

Sanded, cleaned with thinner, mounted on old bolts. Several coats. The color and level of sheen was exactly what I wanted.

They look brand new, and have remained so for several years.

$6 dollars plus some sandpaper and thinner. And less than an hours' work.

Done.

My wife saw these and asked “What are they?” I answered, “You told me to grow a pair...”

The McMaster Carr phenolic knobs.

Nice balls! All shiny.

(I can’t say the rest of it, I edited it, sorry.)

I went a different way and painted them in Awlgrip. The green matches the hull.

Kinda blows my instructions to new helmsmen: "Red means fire."

Then again, if it were electric propulsion, green would make sense. Maybe you've started a new trend!

Next boat I think I’ll try different shapes for gear versus throttle. Would be helpful in more stressful situations

Greetings,
Mr. m. Good idea. That's got me thinking...

Pattern the throttle after the venerable sea urchin.

I thought Green was go. Red is for the fire extinguishers.

Xsbank, this mariner in the making tips his hat to you! As others have stated, it's good to hear from you.
I value threads like this as they offer creative and varied solutions to common problems. When I told my wife that upon reaching full mariner status I planned on embarking on curmudgeon studies....she said I could challenge the course!

Thank you Eric! I recommend the Curmudgeon Course orchestrated by Extinction Rebellion, their course has allowed me to reach curmudgeon levels I had only dreamed about. If that is too abrupt an immersion for any of you who are only curious or sort of nibbling around the edges, the Tides Foundation will work better for you. Both of these organizations can energize a curmudgeon in a most direct way. Anchors, poop plumbing, synthetic oil and flipping oil filters are good for recurrent training. Tying your stern tie to trees, rules of the road and loud music are also good.

I was also amused by all the requests to explain how to employ the ”ignore” function, just as Corona Incubation was driving me back to the site; just when you all thought it was safe to post again!

Oh no, I’m turning into a troll. Good to see you’re about Ken, I was going to send you a message to check all was well but couldn’t remember your handle. I had to search keel cooler to find you. Yep your about - I guess I’ll head back under the bridge.
