Vessel Name
Mad Hatter
Vessel Make
Hatteras 43' DC
As the title says, let's see that handsome boat pets!

This is Rear Admiral Uther von Einfang. He's 13 years young, extremely spry for his age, and currently living aboard our Hatteras 43 DC. He'd never been aboard a boat before (only a motorcycle passenger for 12 years, with a few cross country trips!) but with treats, belly rubs, and a new catfish toy to lay on- he's now a full time liveaboard!

Let's see those other cute pets!

We have Radar. He is a 6 year old Lab. He loves the boat and wants to be on the bow all the time, but we only let him up there at the dock. He absolutely loves water bottles.

This is Bo, it was his first season and loved it. The dinghy is his favorite.

Here's Sailor, the ~11 year old Lab mix who adopted us a year and a half ago in his favorite spot on the couch with his favorite bear. He's not much of a boat dog and, while we don't know about his history before he adopted us, we do know that he doesn't like being on the boat. Well, actually he likes being on the boat up until we fire up the engines. Then he gets downright nervous.

I've owned dogs my whole life and far and away Sailor is the most intuitive and loving dog I've ever owned. You can see it in his eyes.

This shot was taken right after he adopted us. He's on his favorite couch watching a Mariner's game. We were still trying to pick out a name for him and because he was comfortable with my boating hat on and liked the Mariners, we named him Sailor.

Radars’ favorite person to come is the UPS man. He gives Radar treats and takes him for a ride and makes deliveries with Radar. Then he drops him off back at our house. For the drivers birthday Radar put on his UPS uniform. Radar is a real retriever. We never taught him to fetch or retrieve but he instinctively knew how to do it. He goes around to other houses in our neighborhood and picks up tools and brings them home. His favorite tool is a hammer but most any tool will do.

This is Stella, our rescue pup. She's very good on board, though it took a bit of training to get her comfortable hopping in and out of the cockpit. She loves to watch birds and to look down into the water from the dinghy. Going ashore to run on the beach is heaven for her. She's grown pretty big and owns the aft cabin. :smitten:

I really appreciate you all sharing your pets. I've always had a dog (except for a few years when I was single and enlisted in the army,) so all these pictures warms my heart on a cold Virginia morning.

This is Xander, our 6 year old Standard Poodle. He loves the boat (and his shoes to keep him from sliding around). Jetskis and birds are the coolest things ever to watch. He's learned to swim, although we don't do it often, as lifting a 57 lb dog up and down 3.5 feet between the aft deck and swim platform is a bit of a pain (no cockpit on our boat). Being on the boat makes him tired, but he's typically pretty relaxed and so far we haven't found anything boating-wise that seems to bother him.

lol, I love those shoes.

He's learned to love them too. He's not the most careful on slippery surfaces (I can't count how many times I've seen him slide into a wall in the house). So we got him the shoes for some extra grip on the fiberglass decks. He was confused at first, but once he realized he could run and jump around faster without sliding, he loved them. Now if we pull the shoes out he gets excited.

Our dogs wore the same brand of shoes when walking on asphalt in Arizona in the summer. Ruff Wear, right?

Long ago I read a great story by writer Randy White about his Chessie named Gator. They lived on a creek in SW Florida and Gator loved to drag ANYTHING that was in the creek out of the water into the yard. Randy said he had no doubt that Gator would rescue a drowning child, but then again he would also rescue anything else that fell into the creek. He chewed through the dock lines on his neighbor's boat and drug it up the creek to Randy's house.

We have an 11 yo lab/pit mix named Water who was like that when she was younger. Water would pull HUGE fallen tree tops out of the water onto the beach, sometimes 10 or 15 feet long (she's 90 lbs and really strong). She would also swim down 10 or so feet and pull a conch shell off of the bottom. She doesn't like to do that anymore though as it bothers her ears.

The shoes in the pictures are some off-brand from Amazon. They've held up fine so far though. From what I can tell in the pictures, they're pretty similar to the Ruff Wear ones though (probably a knock-off design).

Here's Pearl, our boat dog. She plays hard and naps hard, so in this shot she's crashed out laying in the hatchway to the aft deck. Our second shelter dog. I don't know why anybody pays a zillion dollars for designer dogs when shelters have some of the greatest dogs ever. She's turned into a funny, sweet dog, fiercely guards us and the boys, naturally fetches until she's exhausted. She's only fallen off the boat into the water twice, so now she often wears her doggie pfd with a handle so we can pluck her out. She's snoring at my feet right now. We love her. 20190811_104457.jpeg

Can he be trained to retrieve specific tools? For instance, you could let him out and say

"Radar, fetch a Dewalt cordless drill! And make sure it's one of the 20 volts with the lithium battery, not one of old 18v NiMH ones!"

I can see ALL SORTS of uses for a dog like that!:thumb:

Jolie. Any boat will do.

Here’s Lucy, in this photo she was trying to figure out pelicans diving routine catching fish. We adopted her at age four she’s now months away from fifteen.

If you tell him to go get a hammer, he will go to the shelf that the hammers are on and bring one back. He is absolutely crazy for hammers. He brought an 8 pound sledgehammer home from the neighbors across the street. But hammers is the only tool he knows by name. When he is out and doesn’t want to come inside I take a hammer and hit the workbench, he comes in at a dead run...

Ahoy,
We cruised with Boatswain for 13 years then added Manny. Now the old man is gone so Manny rules the ship! Both are Portuguese Water Dogs, a little over 60lbs each so a good seaworthy size. And both dogs love the boat.

BTW, I may own the only GB with a built-in dog bed in the aft cabin. I got tired of stepping in a dog when crawling out of my berth into the middle of the night!
