1000 hr service for Mainship Pilot 34

We are looking at getting our Yanmar Diesel its 1000 hr service. The challenge we are finding is how to check the valves (as recommended in service manual) given the way the engine is mounted as it appears is impossible to access. Has any other Pilot owner had this done and if so how? Mechanic at the yard is perplexed. Boat is winterized so I have time before the season starts.

Huh! The Pilot 34 gives great access to the Yanmar 370 hp single engine. Maybe you have twins?

Yes, the forward valves are underneath the pilot house sole but it is easy enough to reach up and check them. The only slightly difficult thing is getting the valve cover off but it will roll off to the side.

And FWIW Tony Athens, the owner of Seaboard Marine in California, a Cummins and Yanmar dealer, thinks that 1,000 hour service on the valves is excessive, particularly if the recommended 100 hour check was done.

Thanks, I had not looked just spoken to mechanic. He's a crotchety old coot so maybe didn't feel like doing it.

Engine maintenance records indicate all required service was done throughout the years. Appreciate the feedback from Tony, I have a message into Niemic in New Bedford who is highly regarded.

Thanks again
