An Open Arctic Ocean

I thought this site has a very good summary of what's happening to the arctic icecap nowadays.

It's never too soon to start panning your Northwest or Northeast Passage

Richard: I'm not so sure that I'm dancing with the loss of ice in the Arctic Ocean!

This hasn't happened since around 800 AD so say some. The little ice age closed it for 1200 years. Studies of Nordic history caused the Brits to send Capt Cook and others to find this ill recorded and rumored opening. No such luck 240 years ago.

There is a great DVD covering this end to end journey made by a Nordhavn 57 4 or 5 years ago.

The open route will be a boon to shipping. Unfortunately if the ice keeps melting the ships will have to find new ports unless they are submarines.
