I was down at the boat yesterday, and spent some time just looking at things that the previous owner (deceased) had done. And it made this old farm boy think of my wife's deceased husband. I married a widow, who had a good first marriage.

So I sat down and wrote an ode to my used boat, and to my wife. With your permission, I will share it,

Bill

ODE TO A USED BOAT

Mine are not the hands that took you for your first cruise.
That was another.
And although I claim you now,
his spirit is still present.

He left his mark in many ways,
and I see them, every day.
Things he made for you,
Places he took you to.

Mine not the joy of first ownership,
Nor the despair of the first grounding
You had the highs and the lows,
With another, not with me.

You are are older now,
And the signs of age show.
But you have weathered storms,
and know your own worth.

So I am proud of your looks,
and of your proven steadfastness.
He can rest easy, in his grave.
You are in good hands,

That is touching -- although I have to admit I was waiting for the twist ending about some hideous thing the previous owner had done, like plumbing the toilet to drain into the water supply tank or connecting the alternator cables to the shower's water control button.

Nice. Not easy to convert feelings to words. I think you and your wife are both fortunate.
