Update: 10 gallons of oil spilled, 5 injured after boat explosion at Port Orchard Yacht Club
Posted by Cathy McLain on February 27, 2012 at 5:27 PM

About 10 gallons of oil were spilled into Puget Sound outside Port Orchard Yacht Club after a 39-foot wooden boat sank and later exploded during efforts to salvage it.

Crews from the Washington State Department of Ecology are working to manage the spill, according to a news release.

Earlier Monday, five people were injured during efforts to salvage the boat, which sank Sunday.

A Kitsap Fire and Rescue official tells KOMO News that the boat had just been raised by salvage crews when its owner tried to hook up a bilge pump and a spark ignited nearby gas cans Monday afternoon.

Two of the victims had serious but non-life-threatening injuries and were taken by ambulance to a local hospital.

The explosion caused minor damage to the boat house and nearby boats. The Department of Ecology warned those living nearby that they may smell odors as a result of the spill.

Most important report is that my boat is ok. Problem was 4 boathouses down from mine. Since I'm in AZ, it was good to hear from my buddy that the fire went out quickly and hopefully I'll have only minor oil scum in the boathouse.

We're at the Eagles View by the casino near Fountain Hills until tomorrow. We move to Deserts Edge just north of the 101 on the 17 tomorrow. We wanted to be a little closer to the BB fields for spring training.

We're still looking for a RV park in a decent neighborhood for next year if you know of any. Seems like everything is out of town that is worth staying at. We looked at some in the 2000 block of Apache yesterday that I wasn't sure I wanted to get out of my car at, much less leave my MH unattended. Mesa has some nie places but again they have a long drive to Goodyear and the parks on that side of town. Tempe and Scottsdale are great towns for what we want to do, but the RV parks aren't jumping out at us.

I like the weather here much better than that at home right now. I might actually get caught up on boat maintenance if the weather was like this.

I lived in Scottsdale for 31 years and know the area well. If spring training BB is high on your list, you may want to try one of these places in Glendale. It (Glendale) is a little far from Tempe & Scottsdale although it's an easy Interstate drive.

Thanks. We've been doing the google thing trying to find central. We're now looking further afield so we'll be looking at Glendale parks when we go to the games at Maryvale and Camelback Ranch parks. I'm guessing there is no perfect park, but we want to find the best spot for us that we can. I hope to keep doing this for a bunch more years.
