Nilsson maxwell windlass

Does anyone out there recognise the model of this windlass and know if it would be suitable for my 42ft Bristol trawler with a 45lb Danforth anchor. It is a little smaller than the windlass currently installed which is unreliable, weak and badly corroded.
I picked it up at a sale in the hope I could use it, thanks in advance, Steve

That looks almost the same model that Tom on Alaskan Sea Duction replaced during our cruise up North this summer. Might PM him.

Before you install, I highly recommend you tear it down and rebuild or replace anything questionable. Also, when you pull the gypsey off look on the underside and it should be marked for the exact chain it is made for.

I had a VC 1000. There were 2 different designs back in 1988. On had flip out dog ears that were used to release and tighten the brake. It also went up and down electrically. The other model free fell and then we raised electrically.

Ask to talk to a tech and he can help you figure out your replacement. If you order a new one (I ordered from Defender) make sure you get the proper chain wheel. There is a number on the bottom of the old one wheel. Make sure you get the right one. Good Luck

Ok thanks, this one has 3 terminals on the motor so I think it is both up and down electrically, the brake is controlled by the knurled disc on top. I would like to use it if it is suitable for my size of boat
Does it look like a VC 1000?

A newer version. Call Maxwell tomorrow and you can be sure. The motor looks like the one I had. It is basically an auto starter prone to over heating, pulls lots of amps. You might be able to get parts from them. Talk to a rep!!!


Depending on how you boat, a windlass is VERY important. Best to invest in a new one. The new ones have a better gear box and motor.

Looks like the one I have on my 40 Albin. Except mine is up only.
I use all 5/16 chain and either a 35 Danforth or a 44 delta.
Works fine.

It looks like a Nissan Maxwell 700, circa 1990 or thereabouts. Any auto electric repair shop can rebuild the motor. Easier than hunting a replacement.

I have a VC1000, the version referred to by Alaskan SD, with flip out handles. I had it rebuilt last month due to a broken shear pin in the gearbox. I suggest you endeavour to bench test it under load before fitting. Mine worked fine until it was put under load with anchor and chain. Manufactured here in New Zealand by James Nilsson for Maxwell I believe. James Nilsson still going strong, Maxwell now owned by Vetus. I suggest you contact www.jamesnilsson.com. that looks like a chevy large style starter sans the nose cone, would have to take a closer look to be sure, but if it is, you can buy replacements at any auto part store for around 50 bucks

Thanks for all your input. The windlass currently installed on my boat looks like the VC 1000 with the handles, it has 6 mounting bolts.
The one in my original post is one I picked up at a sale, it has 4 mounting bolts, if suitable for my anchor and size of boat I will bench test it and make an adaptor plate to mount it.
