My windlass failed me yesterday. After thoroughly testing all the electrical connections and applying 12 volts directly to the motor with a battery charger, I removed the motor and found it full of a very gooey grease. So a seal has failed somewhere between the motor and the gearbox. I cleaned up the motor and now have it back operating but need to fix the problem.

Seems the factory used a lubricant called Castrol TC, a flowing grade 00 grease. No one seems to have that but can get some from Stens, #770123.

My question is: Have any of you used use a good quality gear grease instead of this other stuff? Seems like it should work in a application like this. This equipment does not operate at high speeds, not really a very high load, and for only a few minutes at a time. I would think this would solve the leakage problem these winches have. What do you think?
