looking for a low cost world capable boat???

I would be in my happy place just at the dock on this boat wondering about the stories she could tell and wandering the passageways looking/touching; "where does this go? what does this do?"
 
Why not just anchor it in front of some expensive house in Miami, and live aboard. I bet it would take a while to fill the holding tank...

The home owners' would complain, "You are blocking my view." The 2 story condo here started complaining a while back. Went no where.
They complained about exhaust smell, they were told, what did you expect at a marina with boats? Then they complained about workers.....
Just cant please anyone.
 
I'm probably not in good enough shape to be much help as a crew member but I would LOVE to go on as a passenger.
 
I just motored by the vessel today on my way to Anacortes. She is in rough shape. Expect to pay 5x the sell price just to deal with the cosmetics.
 
These projects are soooo unrealistic.. Some guys get together to "save" these old ships. ALWAYS underfunded, never get off the ground etc. Pilotage, Manning docs, maintenance and repair knock most of these projects out of the water...

Yup - Boats [ships] such as these were nearly unlimited Tax-$$$ maintained throughout their life with service persons serving superiors' orders while aboard. In other words, there was no expense nor any work effort not covered every day of the govt owned boat's life.

Billionaire could handle that type of enormous expense... but... why would they? Guess their bean counter could use it as a BIG write off :facepalm: :facepalm: :dance:
 
It has 4 engines???? I thought these huge displacement hulls were usually powered by a massive single?

This type of powerboat is essentially Diesel-Electric.
Multiple generators that power multiple electric drive motors.
A very flexible system but rather complex.

For a time, I was on a US Destroyer, DD881,built in 43 or 44. They were chipping the bilge and poked a hole through it. No water leakage, they were in dry dock. Just weld a patch on the outside of the hull, presto! No more hole.

This could be said of pretty much any steel vessel. When in doubt, cut it out. ?

Steel commercial trawlers here are routinely hacked apart until they are barely recognisable then sewn back up again. No wonder they go for decades. A little like my grandfather's axe: 3 heads and 12 handles but still going strong. ?

Art..... not sure you ever worked in that funding chain. Certainly not the USCGs if you think the funding flow was/is unlimited and steady.

Most people I know with big recreational boats spend with much more abandon than I saw on the vessels I oversaw.

Seems like these museum boats are hit or miss. The ones that wish to stay operational I think are the ones thatride that funding roller coaster.

Yes, like buying a house next to an airport an d complaining about jet noise.
 
USCGC Acushnet takes 191,000 gallons of fuel. At just $3.00 a gallon you are looking at $573,000.00 to fit it up just once.

Hmmm, rough shape… reminds me of a paint chipping story…

My first job in the Navy was chipping paint. USS Chicago (CG-11) was a 700’ Heavy Cruiser in WESPAC'79, South China Sea. I was assigned to the Boatswain Mate’s Deck Gang, Painting Group (lowest seniority), Paint Chipper (new guys & discipline problems). Our mission was to chip and paint the weather surfaces of the 38 year old steel ship from bow to stern. Then return to the bow and start over, in a never ending cycle. What’s not to love about the Navy!

After about 3 hours into my first day on the job, I returned to the tool locker and asked to swap my chipper for sharp one – I had worked off the chipper's edge. The tool room attendant and the other 2 guys standing around smoking looked at me like I was dim-witted. The more senior tool room guy told another guy to show me how to do it. So, I am escorted back to my paint chipping station, where the guy says there is nothing wrong with my chipper. “Watch”, he says. He takes 3 light chipping strokes and the on the third stroke the chipper flies from his hands and lands in the South China Sea. “Oops”. We walk back in the tool room and the tool guy asks me what happen. Silence, the guys stare at me. I say my chipper fell in the South China Sea. The tool guy said “that can happen when they get dull, be careful”. He reaches in to a box and hands me a new, sharp chipper. I ask “How many chipper do we have?”. “We left San Diego with two gross, 288 chippers. We are down to about 50.” I then ask the dumbest question of my life, “What happens when we run out of chippers?”. The mate just had this sad look at me, shakes his head and says “quit loafing, back to work”.

I learned a lot about the enlisted Navy and about life from that. I would lay in bed at night and think about all the painted ships over the last 250 years, and how many paint chippers must lay on the bottom of the world oceans.

So did she get federal funding because she was on the National historic register?.....Or is it donor based?
The steam ship I served on still gets federal funding.... USCGC Bibb... sunk in John C Pennekamp Park next to her sistership The Duane... Federal funds but no yard periods,sanding, painting etc... An underwater reef accessible to anyone who wants to strap on scuba gear. Not every ship needs to be a shrine to humanity
 
What to do with it.....


If it comes with full fuel.... sell the fuel, take the dinghys, sink the boat and come out way ahead.


Or find a place to permanently anchor it and have one heck of a water front home.....
 
I dont know enough skilled people to crew that boat.
