Long Island Sound Stops

Hello! We are currently on the Chesapeake but will head North. Looking for nice ports on Delaware Bay and LI Sound. We hope to go as far a Nantucut and then back. So, if anyone knows of a recommended 2-3 week loop cruise from NYC with ports and anchorages we'd love to hear it.

50/50 anchor and Marina. No pets. Wife likes to shop antiques. We like historical stuff- houses, museums, etc. love live music

For a quiet anchorage in a scenic area on the north shore:

Hamburg Cove just north of Essex on the Ct River. Grab any available mooring mid week. Weekends rent one.

Napatree Point behind the beach in far eastern Ct near Watch Hill. Little tricky to get there as the channel is narrow, but easy enough.

Hadley Harbor just off of Woods Hole. There are about a dozen free moorings inside. If all occupied anchor outside.

For marinas, shore life:

Essex Ct- Brewers Marina. Walk to the Griswold Inn for drinks or dinner.

Mystic Seaport. Very expensive, but includes admission to the Seaport. After dark after the tourists go home, it is almost magical as you think you are in a 17th century whaling port. Walk south to the drawbridge for 21st century bars and restaurants.

Newport. Everyone should see Newport at least once and we do it a couple of times each year. Marinas are expensive but Oldport has moorings and launch service.

Edgartown, Marthas Vinyard. Rent a mooring, not cheap at about $65/night

I wouldn't go to Nantucket. It is a long way and Nantucket Sound has always been rough when we went. But you can't beat Nantucket for cuteness. Take a mooring, about the same cost as Edgartown.

Roger & Mary, the only thing I would say is that there is no place on Delaware Bay worth stopping. Heading North from the Chesapeake I would add Cape May the the list as we always enjoy stopping there. Otherwise most of the other places worth stopping have been mentioned. Enjoy the trip.

I addition to those above, there is Sag Harbor, Three Mile Harbor, Coecles Harbor that we enjoy going to.
Be in Three Mile on Bastille Day weekend, which is in mid July (look it up on the internet for the date) for a great fireworks show.

Lewes, DE just across from Cape May is highly rated.

Delaware City is spoken highly of at the East end of the C & D canal on the river.

Chesapeake City in the C & D canal is charming.

Lots of places on the NJ ICW are nice too....just depending on how long you want to dawdle.

Many don't understand the NJ inlets or places to stop .....and the Internet has improperly vilified what they don't really have much experience with.

Delaware Bay/Cape May

We are in the process of bringing our boat home to Maine from Florida, and crossed Delaware Bay from the CD canal last week. We stopped at the Delaware City Marina for one night. The current is strong there, but the dock crew was great in making docking easy. They also provide a sea conditions briefing each night at 5:00 PM, which we found to be very helpful. You do not want to tempt fate in Delaware Bay as conditions can get very nasty very quickly if you do not pick your day to cross it. We were very lucky, and sea conditions were calm in our passage from Delaware City to Cape May.

Our boat is now at the South Jersey Marina in Cape May. It is a great marina, with one of the best shower facilities we had seen from Florida to Cape May.

Camden_J you are so right about Delaware Bay. We left Chesapeake City (last week) on the CD Canal with a good weather report for the Bay. Heading to Cape May it got so rough so fast that after 2 hours of cruising south we turned around and went back to Chesapeake City.

We are also members of an "American Yacht Club" affiliated club so if other members see this please advise about reciprocating clubs on this area.

We stayed at 79th Street Marina for NYC while looping in 2010 but have heard its very run down now. Recommendations for NYC are also appreciated.

Sag Harbor is a very pricey place, even for moorings, crowded in season, but where you can google at the million dollar yachts. Some nice anchoring coves along Shelter Island nearby.

I agree with 1sailor, but the last couple of years we go under the bridge and anchor up in there, active captain has some good details, plenty of elbow room and water depth, good dingy dock and nice town to walk around and/or catch lunch etc..

Hi again. We went home a few weeks but have returned to the boat in Hamburg Cove Ct. thanks for this suggestion as we enjoyed Essex and the Cove. We are at Block Island and trying to decide if the trip the Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket are worth it. Or, should we head to cape Cod or Narragansett Bay? We have already visited Newport and Mystic. Advice is much appreciated.

Spend a night in Newport (East Passage Narragansett Bay) then Martha's Vinyard would be my vote. Lots to see. Nice clean water for a swim. Lake tashmoo for a quite night as anchor. Vinyard Haven nice port with slips and moorings....call ahead. Oak Bluffs is the Honky Tonk on the Vinyard. Edgar town first come first serv moorings. Obama is on the Vinyard around this time so that can screw things up on the roads. Then run to Nantucket. Again call ahead.

Second that recommendation. First come first served on the moorings and it can fill early on weekends but you can anchor out.

Hi Roger,

In Newport tonight. Highly recomended.We just did a cruise that began in Cuttyhunk a must stop. From there we went to Onset which is nice but we prefer anchoring in Red Brook Harbor. From there to Provincetown a very family friendly place. On to Boston. Books have been written. We also had tickets for the Red Sox. Plymouth next but the Mayflower is undergoing restoration at Mystic Seaport. Hope you saw it there.

New Bedford and Fairhaven. we were there for three days and will be back. Great towns with lots of history, architecture and great food. Another must stop.

We really enjoy Cuttyhunk and Menemsha. Marthas Vinyard has a pretty good municipal bus system for getting around,
