Industrial lock

Well we left the slip at Seabrook marina at daylight and made it to the Industrial lock, but we are having to wait on at least two red flagged barges to lock through before us.

Pretty interesting to watch however. These tug captains can do wonders maneuvering these big barges.

Is there a max waiting time?

Also, I hear the tug captains saying the river is very high. Hope I can buck the current in my slow boat.

Is there a possibility I might have a long wait at the Harvey lock?

I am not aware of any standard max wait time for recreational vessels. My father and I once waited for 8 hours on a center console in 38deg drizzle. Finally the captain of a red flag tow who had been making chatter with my dad on 68 realized how long we had been waiting and chastised the lockmaster then refused to go through until we had locked through. Thank God for the small "cabin" under the center console for storage and the head....it came in very handy on that delivery trip.

Excuse my ignorance but what does the red flag mean?

Red Flag is a euphemism for Hazardous/ Explosive Cargo. The international signal is the Bravo Flag, Or an all around red light.


However, this is a misnomer, since the signals are often misused by Tug and Barge workers who leave the flag up when simply moving the product. It actually only is needed to be displayed when transferring the product at a terminal or to another vessel.

In any case, if you see a barge (or a ship) with the Red signal, stay away. The fumes can kill ya.

A history tidbit:

The gates on the Industrial Canal Lock are the same vintage as those on the Panama Canal, and made buy the same yard.

I have been told by the Chickamauga Lock Master that the COE authorizes them to hold a private vessel for up to 4 hours if commercial tows are present.

Lock Masters won't let other vessels lock through with a red flag tow, so instead of maybe a couple of tows plus two or three other vessels locking through together the red flag takes up an entire locking cycle.
Maybe two red flags can go thorugh together? I don't know, anybody?

The red flag or Bravo flag indicates that the vessel is carrying hazardous liquids or loading / discharging hazardous liquids. It is a REQUIRED day signal with a red all around light at night when loading or discharging at dock or anchor. Note that the flag also signals that the vessel is "carrying" that hazardous liquid and is flown at all times to signify that condition. It is not really "flown" in that most are welded on and painted with the proper signage.
Steve: correct on the red flags locking by themselves. You can go on line at the COE lock and dam page and find out exactly how many boats are waiting, locking time, difference in water levels, wait times, etc... updated fairly often usually real time input.

Neworleansrich: I did not know that about the Industrial lock and the Panama Canal locks. I did know that the M.S. Christobal made regular supply runs from the dock just above the Industrial Lock to the Canal Zone for about 40 years.

Steve: Looks like the River Stage was better than 17' (flood stage) on that picture. Also looks like the "any excuse" for a parade and party in N.O. was going strong then.
