Dockwise Transport Fail
It looks like on of their ships, carrying six superyachts and other cargo lost power as it was submerging to offload this morning in Palma, listing severely to starboard. No one was injured, but several of the yachts came to rest aside each other.

Whoa! - not good. I'm wondering how losing power could cause such a thing. Power actuated valves with no manual backup? Surely this took place over a considerable period of time.

I'm curious. It's my understanding that they flood the ballast tanks evenly. Loosing power would seem to cause them to either stop flooding or purging. This looks like ballast tanks were being flooded unevenly.
It's almost as if they lost power to only one of the generators running the ballast pumps. Then, you'd think they'd have someone closely monitoring list and trim during flood and purge operations. (Then again, what do I know. I'm just a computer guy).

You'd also think that there would be spring loaded valves that would close by themselves if the vessel lost power. Nothing like having flood valves open and no way to close them.

On navy ships, ballasting does not require ballasting pumps. Sea valves are opened and nature takes its course. De watering is done by high volume low pressure air. It doesn't take much positive pressure to "pop" a tank.
If the valves were electronically controlled and there was a loss of power, it would take significant manpower and time to be able to access the valves themselves to manually close them. The tank tops and manual valve actuators are most likely a vertical access down the interior of the well deck superstructure. And of course since everything ought to be compartmentalized, you wouldn't be able to go from one to the next. You'd have to go up and over for each....if in fact the manual actuators had been properly maintained and they actually worked.
Anyway, not a good day for some engineer....
