Digital Yacht AIS transponder issues

So maybe I bought the wrong product but I'm having trouble getting a GPS signal. The transponder has an internal antenna which does not seem to like steel boats.

The instructions say 'mount where there is a clear view of the sky'. How do you do this with an internal GPS in a unit that is not meant to be mounted out in the weather?

If you have steel between the transponder and the satellite (s) you will have problems. Fiberglass is usually not a problem. Probably should see if they offer an optional external antenna. Or maybe swap it out for a unit that does.
