Today I had the opportunity to make a run from Port Townsend out to Tatoosh Island to transport a charter looking at a renovation of the Old Lighthouse. I understand the lighthouse is being renovated as part of its turn over back to the Tribes in the future. Since were are giving it back I guess they want it to look pretty.
It was a stellar spring day, had both flat and a short 3' chop at different parts of both legs. Total time on the water was 6.5 hours and logged right at 175 miles.... most of the miles were between 35-40kts. Had to slow to 30kts in the chop. Fuel burn was around 500g., I love driving a fast boat and not have to pay for the fuel. This boat was a sistership to the Fast ferry I delivered a couple years back.
The Coasties were out in the straits, saw a large cutter and a couple smaller ones doing their thing.
It was an amazing day at the island with a small swell and almost no wind.. very unusual.
It was easy to forget all the corona troubles and just get out on the water and enjoy it!

Wow......on several accounts.
Hard to comprehend Tatoosh as a day trip, conditions for such a trip as you saw, and nearly seven hours at that speed.
Had to be exhilarating all around.

Yeah, for a moment there I had a hard time reconciling "day trip to Tatoosh Island from Port Townsend", 35-40 knots and an 40-foot Ocean Alexander. "Fast Ferry" made it all make sense!

Glad you got to enjoy some time out on the water today. Down here in Port Ludlow it was definitely smooth trawler water most of the day.

Driving these foil assisted cats at speed really wears you out, they dont really go very straight in lumpy seas and no auto pilots on most of them to make sure you keep a watch for crap in the water.
Interesting fact is they get the same MPG at 20 or 40 kts, this one today was averaging .42 MPG. As the boat was empty ( 4 vs 79) and light, it didn't ride as good as it normally does.

Even though I have a lot of miles in these boats ( 3 different ones now) I still am amazed to be traveling across less than smooth water at speeds faster than I barefoot ski behind our comp ski boat on flat water.
