Seeing some threads about skippers, crew and boat handling, I thought I'd share a great song composed during a 25 boat Cruise in Company along the French Normandy coast in 1999.

It was the end of cruise gala dinner. It had been a brilliant time and spirits were high. When the speeches came to a close, Alice, the wife of the skipper of Star Tiger, stood and asked if we knew the tune to the Hokey Cokey. 'Yes,' was the resounding cry (It's on You Tube).

Handing out the song sheets, we all stood to sing....

The Crew's Lament

I bring the starboard fenders in,
Put the port fenders out,
In, out, in, out and change them all about;
Then I get the ropes out, and I tie them down,
And that's when he starts to shout….

Chorus:
"We're coming in along the port side,
Fenders hanging to the quay-side,
Don’t forget we've got a rip tide."
Then he turns the boat about!

I bring the port fenders in,
Put the starboard fenders out,
In, out, in, out and change them all about;
Then I get the ropes out, and I tie them down,
And that's when he starts to shout….

Chorus:
"We're coming in along the starboard side,
Fenders hanging to the quay-side,
Don’t forget we've got a rip tide."
Then he turns the boat about!

I plug electrics in, get the hose-pipe out,
In, out, in, out, and spray it all about,
I give the boat a dousing,
And then I scrub it down;
That's when he begins to shout….

Chorus:
"Don’t forget to wash the dinghy,
With the polish don't be stingy,
Why are women always whingey?"
This is what boating's all about….

First we're eating in, then we're eating out,
In, out, in, out, the whisky bottle's out,
Then he gets some mates on
And they all want grub,
That's when I begin to shout!

Chorus:
"Don’t think I like this cruising,
All you think about is boozing,
Later on you will be snoozing."
Is this what boating's all about?[

The admiral would probably agree, LOL!

I am making a motion to have this as the opening hymn for our future coast guard auxiliary meetings.
