Well, if we are going to go there, you attach to a cleat with a hitch not a knot!

Unless you go around the cleat and then knot the line to itself!

Or simply throw the eye over the cleat and tighten, in which case you have used a splice (or a knot if you have made the eye with a knot)!

Our marina in FL has the best cleats I’ve ever used. They are mounted in a track and can be slid to any position that best meets your needs.

That track system is what my marina in Rhode Island uses as well. We love it. Tune the cleats exactly to how to tie your boat.

Took a stroll around the marina a few years ago and made this collage of all of the "right" ways to tie off to a cleat.
