Hold on there champ.
Steel boats aren't exactly maintenance free either

As for maintenance wearing you down as you get older, I'll say it again
The coin saved buying our boat vs a comparable variant in steel or glass pays for a lifetime of paid maintenance.
If I chose to, the only effort I would do is a few keystrokes transferring funds into the workers account.

And above all that think of you and your partners personal comfort onboard because a happy crew means you get to keep the boat
Yep

With certain boat materials like wood, not all boats are equal. Depending on how the thing was constructed, the type of wood used, etc. the amount of maintenance and ease of keeping it in good condition can vary widely. Availability of people with the skills to help keep the thing in good shape varies a lot as well based on where in the world you are.

We have 2 boats, 1 small Dutch built steel and 1 fibreglass British built.
The only repairs on the fibreglass boat hull are if I make a cock up and ding it.
The steel boat needs constant checking for rust, anodes, paint chips etc.
I'm a hands on guy and I'm getting a tad older and I want an easy life, I'm a 'hands on' not cheque book maintenance guy .
So the steel boats up for sale.
I stand by what I said about wooden boats, a well kept boat is like a beautiful woman, a joy to dream about and admire from a distance, but above my pay grade.

I imagine you are correct if staying in 40fters in a land with a large selection of boats
But scale up a bit and you'll likely find the maths changes considerably or at least it did for us.

I'm a hands on guy as well but realistically I can't do everything.

Same applies to a comfortable home, at some stage you need to get somone in to help.
