Any thoughts on a 42' CHB Europa?

We are thinking of buying a 42' CHB Europa. Our last boat was a Union 36 sailboat so this monster looks like a lot of windage. Does anyone have experience with a Europa and coastal cruising on the west coast?

Our previous boat was a 31 Ericson Cutter. 9 years of motoring around Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands, then moved up to the 45 CHB. No regrets after 7 years TRAWLING the Puget Sound and North. Single 671 Detroit with 24 volt bow thruster. Windage is not a problem. CHB is an under rated boat.

Thanks for the input. We are going to look at her again today with flashlights, moisture meter and ice pick. If all looks good we'll probably make an offer. This boats been around for over 30 years, if her bones are good she's a keeper. New paint, new instruments and new owners will make her shine.

and ice pick.

Most owners will install an ice pick in your butt or one of your eyes , if you attempt yo attack a boat with one.

If you know so little about boat surveying , perhaps a trained experienced surveyor would be cheaper than a White Cane .

May I suggest you read Marine Survey 101 before inspecting the boat.

One of my friends owns a 42' and I own a 45', both Europas. My wife loves ours because of the galley up and the windows! Feel free to pm me or ask any specific questions... I am happy to help!

I would echo the survey suggestion- best of luck!

Rotten windows, rotten walls, rotten decks, any sign of stain or discolouration on the inside teak, look under the side decks in the staterooms for stains, mildew smells, rusty fuel tanks. Get the decks wet and look for bad seams.

100% of the CHBs I looked at that were for sale had some or all of these defects. Not saying there aren't any good ones out there, just that there are many bad ones and that's all that I saw.

I have never owned a CHB but we have crewed on one from Seattle to Portland and Protland to Northern California. It was a pretty stable boat in North Pacific Swells and in a pretty decent storm (30 knot winds 15 foot short waves). This version had twin engines but I don't remember what type. I will say that we found the boat very sensitive to maintenance. We had fuel issues the second trip. It also had some real issues with leaking windows. All in all it was a pretty nice boat to cruise.
