Saw a report that bridge is damaged and cannot be opened.
Cruisersnet.net via Chesapeake Bay Magazine.

According to this report the bridge will be closed to Vehicle traffic from April 2 to April 14 to replace a support pin that holds the bridge in the closed position and assists in handling the vehicle weight.

How this relates to vessel traffic is not addressed in the article.

I think that scheduled repair notice for the pin is from 2013.
This is about a broken gear that needs new one to be fabricated and replaced.

The Alligator bridge has a closed height of 14', maybe more if you take the span to the west of the lift bridge. That will accommodate most trawlers if you lower your mast and bimini. But there is another route that has a bridge height of 45 or 65' depending on how you get around Roanoke Island.

Starting from the Oriental area if you head NE up the Pamlico Sound, past Ocracoke and towards Manteo you can go to the west of Roanoke Island if you can clear the 45' northern bridge. If you are in a sailboat you can go east of Roanoke Island, past Manteo and then back west once you clear Roanoke Island to get around that bridge. The water is a little thin on this second route and the channel is a little narrow, but if you watch yourself you will make it and carry 6+' the whole way.

Either way, you only add maybe 10 miles versus the Alligator bridge.

Then you join up with the Coinjock route in the Albermarle Sound or head further west towards Elizabeth City for the Dismal Swamp route.

GOOD NEWS!
A phone call today, 3/23, to the USCG 5th District Bridge Section confirmed that the Alligator River Swing Bridge has now re-opened. A bent shaft was pulled, straightened and replaced successfully to allow full operation. NC DOT did a great job getting the bridge operational so quickly. Alligator River Bridge crosses the Alligator River section of the ICW at Statute Mile 84, south of flashing daybeacon #12.

I had the same problem. A Google News search comes up with 2013 events. I'm heading up that way later this week.
