A project I’ve been thinking about for several years is to remove the marine MDF on 3 sides that surrounds Haven’s sundeck and replace it with Sunbrella. A friend said she’d help complete the project with her Sailrite but was apprehensive about possible issues with ABYC deck safety. The existing boards that “pen” that aft deck are heavy but aren’t structurally vital to the vessel. Although I want to replace them with canvas, of course, I don’t want to raise problems with safety issues. Is there someone on the forum who may be familiar with this issue?

There isn’t any requirement about having side boards around the sundeck that I am aware of. Lots of boats have the side boards but a lot of boats do not. Personal preference. I would make the Sunbrella side curtains strong enough to contain dogs and kids though. You can use some twist lock fasteners on the corners maybe.

Thanks for that advice, Dave. Very much appreciated.
