I agree!

Agreed. I smell a rat. Check out the URL on this website referenced in Michael's letter.

I Want a Vessel Safety Check!

When I go to the URL, it looks official but starts with wow.uscgaux.info. They have a link to the USCGAux Homepage www.cgaux.org/]Welcome to the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Official Web Portal[/url]) but the "wow.iscgaux.info" appears bogus to me.

Should the USCGAux be involved in documentation enforcement?

It appears the link is to the 'District 9 - Central' website. The official USCG Aux site links to this same domain.

I was also suspicious of the domain on the letter (vanity domain redirecting to a non .gov address, the wow. prefix etc. but it appears to be confirmed by the official site and the registar info.

It appears each district has it's own website and they are all over the place. (I followed from the .mil site to a few to confirm). Poor user experience practices by the way. You should never change top level domains when moving users from one "owned" site to another. A better path would be cgaux.org to district9.cgaux.org which also ensures SSL certificates work against the TLD.

Two years ago a boater in our marina was inspected by the Coasties and found to not have the proper number of fire extinguishers on board, the citation he received said the max fine was some crazy number, 20,000 dollars as I recall. He purchased the correct number of extinguishers, went to the office, told them he had complied, and paid nothing.

I suspect the max fine is what a huge commercial ship might be forced to pay.

Max fine is what a repeat offender who ignores them is likely to pay. Third offense, you don't show up in court, don't remedy, just rules max. Rare.
