RE: Island Gypsy 36

Scott,

Our Doriana is a Europa and has a single fwd island bed cabin; immediately behind it is separate shower to stbd larger than most home shower stalls, with a separate head with washbasin etc to port.Dinette converts to a double.

I`m surprised by GB36 prices in USA, I`ve seen adverts for GB36s here described as in good order, from $140K,what they are really like I can`t say. An IG36 I inspected but rejected dropped in asking price from about $180k to $130k before it sold.

Keep looking, take your time, you`ll find something. BruceK

Thanks Bruce, there are a couple IG's like yours around, I did notice that huge looking shower stall, glad to hear that it really is that big.

Thanks,

Scott

RE: Island Gypsy 36

Thanks for the link on the Pacific Seacraft Andy, I enjoyed reading it. A friend's uncle has one and they totally love it. If I had the money, I would hands-down by that boat. It suits me in so many ways. But someday.

Thanks again,

Scott

IG 36 EU #110 built in 1989 by kong&Halvorsen

I own this trawler since 2005 I bought her in Cannes France. I live near Florence and I cruise Mediterranean sea between Corse, Sardinia and Tuscany coast. In Italy this kind of boats are rare I did not find anyone to talk abaut. My boat named Nike is powered by two Ford Faryman 135hp I cruise at 1900rph and my speed is 7,6 knots at GPS,at 2600rph I reach the maximum speed of 10 knot.Becouse I heard similar boats reach 12 knot I'd know if someone of you own same boat same power has the same results. Perhaps I have propeller too light.Waiting for news,by evryone.

Hello Marco,

Welcome to the forum. I do not own an IG, but just wanted to let you know that you will be an interesting addition to the forum. Living near Florence and cruising the islands of the Med sounds absolutely wonderful. Please post as much about your cruising as you can, and also pictures pictures pictures. Do you have a blog or website for your cruises?

Greetings,
Welcome aboard Mr. marco. I do not have any information about IG's but I'm sure there are many on this board who would be pleased to help you out. Keep in mind, how low you sit in the water will have some effect on speed. Maybe your mate has brought too much "stuff" on board. I know mine has.

I looked at an IG several years back, cannot recall the exact configuration, but one thing I remember was the placement of the flybridge helm AFT on the flybridge, like you might see on a sportfisher that would need aft visibility etc for backing down on all those big tunas, etc. What is the purpose of placing it there on a trawler? Can any of you owners with that configuration comment?

Our IG32 flybridge helm is located forward.

With a single Cummins 330 6BTA, if we want to burn the fuel, and fairly heavily loaded and towing a RIB, she'll go 12.9 kts over the ground at 2725 rpm in still water. But we are a bit over propped at the moment (to be rectified next winter). When we first got the boat it had a different prop and we managed to eke out 13.7 kts at 2800 rpm.

We cruise at 1800 rpm which gives us about 8.2 -8.4 kts.

Good Afternoon. I wanted to update you all, I ended up buying a 37' Newburyport Trawler. Its a Monk design and it was built by Hershine. The Hull ID begins with MNK so I am more inclined to describe it to others as a Monk 36 as they are nearly identical with similar layouts. Presently there is a new listing on Yachtworld for a 42' Monk that is close in age to mine (mine is at 1987). It looks almost identical to mine except for it has a galley down and of course is 42'.

My question is last night while filling the water tank, I opened the inspection hatch in the aft stateroom to check for leaks at the deck fill. I noticed that on top of the hull was a bed of sand-like substance. It appeared to have been laid in and around the seems of the cabin sole and walls. Does anyone know if this is common in these types of trawelers and if so, what was this used for? Stability, insulation or what?

Scott

Hello Marco,

Good to see you flying the Island Gypsy flag in your part of the world, and a nice part of the world it is.

Your boat sounds similar to mine except that my Fords were marinised by Lehman, and are rated at 120hp, the boat being a 1981 build. However that is neither here nor there in regard to running the boat.

Most of the Lehman owners on the forum tend to run their boats at around 1650-1800 rpm as this seems to give the optimum performance and economy. I think it is fair to say that the single engine boats tend to operate at slightly higher rpm than their twin counterparts.

There is a good archive section in the forum which discusses this further and I would recommend you have trawl through there as there is some good information about engine speed and fuel efficiency. I have to say running my boat at anything over 1850rpm for an extended period of time is something I would not do on a regular basis, given the strain it puts on these type of older engines, and the resultant excessive increase in fuel consumption for very little increase in performance.

You may be right about your props though, on boats like twin IG 36's, 1900rpm should give you about 8.5 knots over ground.

How about some photo's of 'Nike' and your part of the world.

IG 36 quad cabin restoration #47

Scott: My vessel is an IG 36 quad cabin bullt in 1981, hull #47. In 2009-11 we completely restored her from stem to stern. I'm a new member to this forum but can tell you that when we redid her teak decks, we found they were laid on fiberglass and had no rot. What we did find was that the plank caulking was old and needed to be replaced. We did this by making a jig exactly the size of the caulding strip and then routed out all the old caulking. It was quite a job but worked well. We used a power saw and chisel to complete the removal and the jig speeded up the project. We also removed all the bungs, and then recaulked all the deck seams, put caulking in the screw holes and rebunged the whole boat. She is tight and there are no leaks.

RIMA is painted flag blue Awlgrip with cream topsides (Hinckley color) and powered by twin 2515E 6 cylinder 120 HP Lehmans. She has an Onan (Cummins) generator set, 4.5KW and new fuel and water tanks. We updated all the electronics, wiring, plumbing, canvas, A/C, interior etc. She looks and operates very well for our cruises since we live on the west coast of Florida, near Sarasota. If you did purchase the boat and will be working on her this summer in the Chesapeake area and I can help you deal with issues, drop me a line. I lived and boated on the Chesapeake for a number of years and am very familiar with the area and yards, shipwrights, parts, etc. Good luck with you vessel, they have excellent "bones" and I think are worth the effort to restore. Regards, Bob

May I add our welcome to the Forum. We are in Sydney Australia where many IGs were sold; our IG36, hull no.39, has twin 120hp Ford Lehman engines. I believe she will do 12 knots, but have not tried it, though we have seen 23kph( our GPS is set metric) with swells passing under us from behind,an exciting ride!. Our props are 24 inch Michigans,17 inch pitch, according to the Owners Manual. Later IG36s sold here had 135hp Lehmans, a much later one, built around 1989, had 200hp Volvos, and trim tabs. Ours appears to have a hull modification at the stern extending in about 600mm from the transom,to deflect the stern up,and bow down, a sort of fixed trim tab I guess.
Our flybridge steering station is forward,I`ve not seen one set aft on a Halvorsen, including a 50ft. timber Kong and Halvorsen I`ve seen.
I am aware of Kong and Halvorsen IG36s in the US,but not in Europe. It would be interesting to know how it reached Cannes where you bought it. BruceK
