Halvorsen 57 new hull colour or Color

Hi ,

thought I would share a couple of photo's of the change in Hull colour for Liberty our Halvorsen 57. The Flag Blue was not a good choice for the harsh conditions in Australia, and we are planning on taking Liberty across to New Caledonia and Vanuatu in May 2019, so this colour will be a better choice for the sub tropics.

I hate white hulls. I think the darker is more attractive, but get your point about your intended travel climate. That lighter gray is really attractive, and what you said now makes me realize why Nordhavn, etc. choose the colors they do.

Once you get on your voyage, you’ll actually be “haze gray and underway.” (Navy joke).

Gray is a nice color. But there isn’t anything wrong with white either.

Hi Bruce,

sorry for the late response, but have been out enjoying Pittwater. I did a lot of research and got quotes and came to the conclusion to try a vinyl Wrap. My Reasons are as follows.

Painting is very expensive and on top of the actual cost to do it is the hardstand Cost per day

Paint especially the dark colours tends to fade quickly and requires a lot of polishing and waxing to keep it looking good.

If paint is damaged , although the repair is in most cases seamless, it is quick expensive.

To wrap the boat was approx 1/3 to a 1/4 of the price of painting the vessel and was completed by a team of 3 in just over 2 days, so the cost of the hard stand was minimal, and disruption also minimal.

The Vinyl wrap using a 3M product comes with a 8 to 10 year life expectancy, and the Beauty is you only need to wash it , no waxing required. Repairs are done quickly and easily, although you can see them when up close.

I thought at the price I would give it a go, and if it does not work for me , then we simply rip of the Vinyl and repaint the vessel in the future. We still did the prep work as if we were spraying, but we did it in the water at the slip, which is practical as this is at the angle a vessel is viewed from , not looking up from the hardstand.

Interestingly the Vinyl is starting to take off, especially in the Superyacht market where it can cost Millions to Paint one vessel.

thanks for the kind comments. Working on and upgrading Liberty is my Hobby , and I love it. We just completed installing a new Galley with Appliances, and re arranged the Main Cabin also , see photo's below

Very interesting about the vinyl wrap. I like it.

My off-white gel coat has not got many 'refresh' lives left, and I was dreading making enquiries about painting. And just washing the vinyl is a bonus as well!

One of my dock neighbors used vinyl wrap on his cruiser and it looks very nice, would have never found out that it was not paint if he did not tell me.

Thanks Chris, very interesting. A US member, possibly Pau Hana, wrote about doing the same process.
Painting is so expensive and time consuming, especially the first painting, much of it in the preparation, masking up, etc. Plus paint, solvents, usable supplies, etc, the wrap makes sense. I`m assuming it is restricted to the hull topsides, above would be harder to wrap, but I don`t really know.
A great transformation, achieved in just 2 days.

Vinyl Wrap and fenders

The Vinyl Wrap certainly looks the part and makes good economic sense.

How does it fair with fenders rubbing up against it at the marina or in a raft up when things get a bit lumpy as a maniac roars past with no consideration of his wake!

Sorry about that rant.

I have our 97 68' Horizon and am considering vinyl wrap but the pressure on the fenders at times in many berths I have been in would seriously test it out I think.

Any thoughts or experiences?

That looks seriously good.... how strong is the wrapp.. will it hold up to the odd bump I’d. A swing mooring buoy?

just responding to some questions on the wrap. So far we have not sustained any damage , however I am extra careful. We are lucky in that we sit in a pen with fingers down each side so in effect she sits in the middle, or at least only lightly rubs up on the fenders. The vinyl is surprisingly strong and resilient . No Waxing , just a wash .

A painted hull is easy to scratch, don't worry about that, but is way more to fix.

People still say to me you repainted her another colour !!!

We head off to the Gold Coast in 3 weeks in preparation for Liberty to venture to New Cal and Vanuatu in early May. Lots of preparation and small jobs being undertaken and completed now . We plan to have the boat away for about 5 months.
