In preparation for our first season, we were closing up our boat yesterday after working most of the day. The forward center window in the main cabin was fully open. I applied an upward pressure to relieve the strain on the holding arms, and the entire window came unattached from the hull.

A little startled, on investigation, the “hinge” was a strip of an inch wide plastic material screwed to the window and the cabin top, and had split completely.

I would like to think this is not normal. My thought was it should be a SS piano hinge or perhaps a small strap hinge.

Suggestions?

Ours has been replaced at some stage with a full width piano hinge -very solid and stable BUT...........it leaks if we get heavy spray over the bow or during wash down. I intend to pull it off, put something like a strip of vinyl underneath it then reinstall
Your strip of plastic, although destined to fail eventually, at least prevented leaks.
