To the left of each thread. What does each type and color mean?

I believe....
blue+ you have read everything in there, no new content since your last reading that thread.
yellow: a new thread you have not yet opened or read anything in it yet
red: You checked that thread out and someone posted new content since you last checked out the thread.

You will see a legend explaining this at the very bottom left past the quick reply. Here is a cut/paste of that:
