Perhaps a captcha image for those starting new accounts will slow the spammers?

Possibly but there are now little subroutines that can break them and we've had better luck with other barriers. if you see spam please hit the little red triangle next to the post and report it.

Probably not. I think that self restraint (i.e. not clicking on ODE posts) is the best preventative.
