I suspect you want to add it as an avatar so it is seen on posts.
"user CP' on the top menu.
You can add a photo to both your profile (seen when people click to view your profile), and as your avatar - shown on the left sidebar whenever you post.
And no, it was not a silly question as it is not that intuitive on many forum software platforms.
