We plan to cruise and anchor extensively. I see the need for a genny and AC. We are 65, newly retired and spoiled

The Bimini is a normal dice and doesn’t leave a lot of space for solar. I have found an 8kw genset locally at a very decent price. I would do the install and probably have a pro wire it up.

What is the 8kw that you found locally? I assume it's used, or maybe new but been sitting around a while? If it's a Fischer Panda, run a way while you still can.

When I decided to install a generator, I checked the used market. Figured wouldn't be a problem finding a used generator. The only small marinized ones I found were FPs. After some research, I became convinced people had replaced them with something else due to issues. Too bad - it's an interesting design with water jacketed powerhead. Not a bad idea for hi-output alternators.

Well, this question is now moot. An offer we made on an Island Gypsy that has a generator has been accepted and we are moving forward with this boat. I appreciate all the info shared.

the generator we found is a Mastervolt.

New Next-Gen 5kw $15k installed

We lived with solar panels and a Honda 2000 for 6 years. Finally broke down. The 36’ Heritage single 6BT 5.9 didn’t come with a genset so it was a full install. Absolutely love it. Can barely hear it outside and not too bad inside. San Diego

Good to see another(potential) IG owner on the forum.

I know I am biased however IMHO they are great boats. Is it a classic aft cabin or the Europa style?

At the risk of starting an avalanche of posts does it still have its teak decks?

Unless it's a Fischer Panda (yes run!) - go for it, particularly as you're happy to do your own install. I spend a lot of time on the hook and wouldn't be without mine. I have 1300 watts of solar, so only use it minimally for hot water etc., but still consider it a must have.

If I were in need of a genset I would absolutely do the install myself. I might have the mechanic do some of the work if it is really tight and I couldn’t fit in there. I have a pretty small mechanic and if need be his father in law is even smaller. I just had them replace the raw water pumps on my engines because I couldn’t reach the port side one.

Congratulations! Hope you enjoy it. My last boat was an IG36, my current boat is a derivative. IG usually installed an Onan 6.5.

Good luck with the new boat, possibly. Hope it works out well.

I am refitting a 1973 GB36 which never had a generator. I am taking a different approach. I plan to install more battery capacity and an inverter. I will carry a Honda 2.2KW gen on the rear deck which I can plug in to the shore power for charging when necessary or maybe to run a toaster in the morning. They are about $1200 and I will be carrying gasoline for the dinghy outboard anyway. This is purely a budget decision, but I think it will be workable and less complex overall.

Have you considered ditching the Honda and going with a couple solar panels instead?

Thanks again for all of the different responses! I will be moving my posts to the Island Gypsy page from now on.

Yes the boat still has teak decks. I’m not thrilled with this but will work with them or remove them.

The solar option is on my mind instead of a generator. With the cost of a used 8k genset being roughly 6,000.00, a lot of batteries and solar can be installed. This would limit or eliminate the use of the AC when away from a dock. It would probably limit use of a water maker as well.

We shall see.

Over to the IG page now.

I do plan to use Solar. This is sort of belts and suspenders. One of the features to this approach is I don't have to modify the boat in any way. I can begin cruising before investing/installing S/P. If I find that I don't need it, or find a better way or hit the lottery, I can just take the gen off the boat. Thanks.

I have heard of W/M being run with batts & inverter system.

Jon, Hope all goes well with your IG36 purchase. We really like our 36IG Classic. It has a 5kw Westerbeke which has been very reliable. One thing I like about having a generator is you do not have to go overboard with an elaborate battery bank if you don't want to. We only have 4 golf cart batteries for both starting and house bank. Of course the genny has its own battery. Has worked well for us. Have cruised the boat from the Great Lakes to the Florida keys!! Many great memories. Good Luck. Peace

The saga of the SS Phelps continues- Boat has no generator. Diesels are beyond my budget considering boat is an 84. Got a GOOD deal on a westerbeke 4.5KW. But it's gas. OK guys, have at it why I should do or not do it. For what I'm paying for it, I could probably sell parts off it for more, so I'm rolling the dice. Question is SHOULD I do it, and are there aspects I have not considered. It would go it the lazarette.

I personally would not install a gas generator on a diesel boat. I would rather invest in solar.

Our use profile is the same. I'm working on a plan for adding a house bank. I have no generator or solar at this time.
