Advice on 5" rip

What would you do to fix this? A mobile repair person said it was irreparable and should be trashed.

Whatever it is, it does look unrepairable.

It is absolutely repairable. I make canvas and can’t even count the times I’ve made repairs like this for MANY boats. He probably wanted to sell you a new one.

You will need a heavy duty sewing machine like the sailrite LSZ, it will do the job nicely. Just needs double canvas reinforcement.

It looks like an inflatable tube, sewing won't help.

Looks like canvas to me. It would help if the op said what it is.

Edit: 5"rip

This is a Zodiac PVC dinghy and the rip is on the port side tube above waterline at the end

It is repairable. However, the PVC is so UV damaged that the material at the edge of the repair will fail in short order. No professional will repair it as they can’t guarantee their work. The tension the patch will put on the existing material will just create the next rip.

You've gotten your money's worth out of that Zodiac. Give it a decent burial.

Been there done that...or didn't do that. Don't waste, time, money or energy.

Agree with tiltrider1. You can repair it, but the repair probably won't last long enough to make it worthwhile.

I would start looking for a new dinghy.
