N41 - 1st hull out of mold.

The friendliest place on the web for anyone who enjoys boating.

3,500NM on 900 gallons is pretty durn good. 3,150NM keeping 10% in reserve will get you to where you need to be. It will be interesting to see what the actual sea trials show.

The Nordhavn folks have been playing with varying the length of their "small" boats for a long time. The 46 (yes I owned one) was a fantastic boat.... I think mine was a 1989 model. Yea, I improved my boat at pretty good expense... totally rebuilt the fwd stateroom, added a more powerful bow thruster plus additional cabinets etc. Meanwhile, they came out with a 47ft boat, discontinuing the 46. I think the engine room was a bit wider and I believe it is a stand up engine room. Then down to a 40 and then up to 52 then 56 and 59 etc, then almost totally abandoning the 'small boat' market to build the much larger boats. Now releasing the 41. They sold many 46 and believed they had saturated the market I dont know how the 47 is doing but, it does look like a great option.
Once, in my mind, crossing the 50 mark is the transition point to more than a small boat. ALL the Nordhavns are built to handle rough weather.... I always felt comfortable and safe on my stabilized 46.
Although I am no longer in the market for another boat, I would think, the 47 would be ideal, if they keep the naturally aspirated main engine and generator. Per the now standard fly bridge.... shrug. I'll be inside. Maybe they have the option of no fly bridge. LOL

Just my thoughts and have little or nothing to do with the real world.
One thing I noticed was, never did they ask current owner for input on how to improve their 'small boats'.

Would be nice if they offered a 'Fine Workboat' interior version for those who want the capabilities and range but not the *bling*

I believe the interior layout is all to owners demand. So that may in fact be possible.

Resale may be an issue though.

N41 - $700K USD - at least for now, that includes electronics, etc.

A very detailed spec is on their website.

Basically what he's said is, "yes we published these numbers and haven't retracted them but we make it clear in the contract you shouldn't believe any of them so we'll tell you 3500 nm but we have no idea on that either as we haven't even built the first boat and don't yet know even what it will weigh and truly have no idea what the range will be so buyer beware."

I don't find his excuses for the insane number published acceptable at all. He released the articles and he knew they weren't realistic. Nordhavn needs to be much more careful about what they say and get published as their PR and Sales personalities often are far beyond what their engineering and manufacturing can realistically be expected to deliver.

This is too much like the deal on the 120 where the buyer was a jerk and lost the case, but no doubt that Nordhavn agreed to and contracted for things they were incapable of delivering. You don't make excuses for saying 8200 nm, you immediately issue a retraction and say it was a colossal fup. Shame on you, Nordhavn.

I would rather have A 120-150 hp single non-turbo diesel engine with a commercial hydraulic gearbox. I'd like to see a folding mast and davit along with a height of less than 15 foot. This would make going inland a lot easier in most places around the weirld.

and about 40ft long, 2 stateroom, 2 heads.

Interesting...I've never looked because a new Nordhavn is not part of our world. We chose a life path which didn't generate that kind of money.

Resale may be an issue though.

Oh, I don't know about that. If I saw two boats identical in every way except one had a much higher price tag because of its opulent interior, and the other had a spartan but well made interior, I'd pay the lower price and put the difference to fuel and exploration :thumb:

Why buy a Nordhavn for inland waters ?

Hmmm, that's 3.9 MPG at 6 knots.
My boat (45' at 45,000 lbs. +/-) gets 3.5 MPG at 7 knots and around 4.6 MPG at 6 knots. Now I don't have actine stabilizers and some other stuff that they do. Would have thought their numbers would have been better with all that fancy engineering. But then their top end is a knot faster than mine.

Ted, what power plants?

At displacement speeds it's all about waterline length and drag. The N41 has a longer waterline, is narrower and lighter than the N40. It should perform better, but not by a lot. Odd that it has twin engines, always less efficient than a single.
The thing that I find startling is that these boats are 40Ft long and weigh 50000#. Ya, wanna make them more efficient make them lighter.

Everyone gets one change of clothes and no food. That should lighten it. LOL

And by the time they're built, they weigh more than the planned numbers.

Isn't an average 40' weigh about 30-35,000?

what's the point or reason for all this weight?

Additional engine, transmission, shaft and prop for starters!

Being it is narrower and lighter, could one assume it “may” be more of a handful in rough conditions .vs a N40 or N43? Curious.

Weight

For comparison, our N40 weighs 55,000. Thats with 300g of fuel aboard a flybridge/paravane boat.

If I was buyer of #1, the very first mod I'd ask for is to fill in those spray rails at the waterline.

What? Look at the :28 and the 2:00 mark of this video to get a good understanding of what spray rails can do for your boat.(Dryer ride!) I added them on my last boat (an 8.4 knot trawler) and they improved my ride. (Less water climbing up the hull.)

Spray rails are good. Lifting rails can be better on some boats to help lift the bow to get on plane faster and stay there.

Just spoke with a Nord rep at the FLL boat show. 5 41s have been sold already. Very well equipped for 700k. As a comparison, the new Beneteau swift trawler 41 is 750k. I know 2 different types of boats, but both are 41' twin engine as a starting point. Given both manufacts reputations, I was surprised that they cost roughly the same.

Nord aims to have a 41 at the MIA show. 41s are built in turkey using the same methodology as the high volume boat builders (such as Bene) use. That is , CAD drawing driving CNC. So each 41 will be identical measured. It was explained that other models that are built in Shanghai are more of a 'craftsman' type. If you measured one hull number to the next, it might not be exact to 1mm per section.

Take sales numbers of Nordhavn and most other builders with a grain of salt. Many of those "sold" boats never get delivered. Hard to compare to the ST since we don't yet have an actual boat. I hope they haven't underestimated costs on a new model. However, there should be savings in Turkey and to be able to sell under a ST shouldn't be too surprising.

Now, our relationship with China has some of the builders there concerned. Well, impulsive autocratic world leaders exist many places and additional sanctions were placed on Turkey with more possible. I would be very worried right now of any investment in manufacturing in Turkey, especially one depending on US sales.

I have no idea where this will all lead. I've seen political disruptions to many industries in many places over my career and it happened long before me as well. I've seen US owned plants taken over by governments in multiple countries and I've seen sanctions and blockades. I feel for builders like Nordhavn, concerned with US tariffs on Chinese production and having reason for concern on selling boats built in Turkey in the US. I anticipate a lot of focus on selling to other markets and on work arounds for US buyers.

I'm Italy based, with a fresh boat (3 years), a small 30ft "fake" trawler from beneteau.
current boat is perfect for me and the intended average use (weekends all the year, 1 week cruise in spring 3 weeks cruise in summer, 1 week cruise in autumn)

but the future for me will be for sure in live aboard condition, cruising "non-stop" for years, starting from a complete tour of the Med and then target to reach North Sea "circumnavigating" Europe.
choice will be for a full displacement trawler about 40" (we are a cruising couple)

this N41 seems very interesting for me, the overall quality should be as per Nordhavn style.
base equipment is definitely complete, just do not understand the choice of having 2 engines instead the typical 1 + wing...

for European customer, possibility of boat pick-up in turkey is awesome
