I have some soft spots in the upper deck on my 1985 KK42 upper deck and will need to open that up. I am guessing that is a plywood core? And the "ribs" that are visible in the cabin - those are formed in fiberglass and not wood cored? If you have gone through this process, photos would be incredibly helpful.

John: I no longer have the core samples but Hobo’s (#120) boat deck it had non-skid on fiberglass over 3/4” or 5/8” plywood. Under that was the molded headliner for the salon.

Good luck on your project.

When I repaired mine I had 3/4" plywood squares about 4"x4" between the top and bottom layers of glass.

Thanks Larry and Scott. That's more or less what I thought. The fiberglass guys thought there might be wooden beams in the molded headliner. I didn't think so.

Larry - good to see you still on the Forum. My neighbor, who was interested in Hobo, is still talking about how is missed the chance . . . he bought a Selene and is now working through a lot of poorly maintained systems.

Larry,

You may want to look at the drawing for the deck construction.

Hull 61 has wood beams, but beneath the fiberglass inner skin of upper deck. I will try to post pics tomorrow

Scott - looked at the photos on you website. Incredibly helpful and I have book-marked the site for future projects (like the bow pulpit and removal of teak decks). A huge thank you for your meticulous documentation.

John, glad you found them. I was trying to attach pics from a more recent repair around hatch area, but pics must be too big.

Wood and Fiber. I will send you pics when I can. Entire upper deck replaced.

Hi Guys you folks have some real KK42 experience.
have any of you seen a deck like this , its a boat forsale on ebay , maybe owner is here too?
but this deck on an early 1977 looks like entire teak and of course it leaks.

listing for information not promotion.

The listing seems to be gone. That looks like a wooden boat not a KK42 (note the wooden gunwales)

Link worked for me, 2nd boat on page. Surely looks like a KK42, decks look awful, and a lot of them. Listing says fibreglass hull. A "project" for sure. Won`t a KK that vintage have a cored hull?

This boat has been around for awhile, with sale prices dropping every year. It was a POS when I looked at it in 2014 for a customer.

Re all teak deck

Defiantly a KK42, I emailed over about it , listing says 1977 so a very early boat and with twin engines. Did KK make initially a single and twin to evaluate owner preference?
The deck does appear to be all wood , but the deck is basically a wood deck with some fiberglass under the Teak.
Boat is in Deale Md. only 3 hrs away but not right for me at moment. Owner says he will keep if it does not sell and it will be his retirement project.
I not surprised to hear it has been on and off market for a while . Boats of this age are always work
BUT. I just hear that a couple that I used to race against in small boats in 90’s, they bought a while ago now a Kk42 new apparently for something in the $1.2M range.
My point being putting real money , say $250k into repairs would not be such a bad thing if it got you a good boat to use for 10-15 yrs.
heres photo of old boat
Thanks for your comments guys .
I will say the thing that confuses me sometimes about the KK42 ( and surprisingly many similar) is the lack of a second cabin for guests. Even something small .
Cheers Warren

For sure a foam cored hull , but that’s still a fiberglass hull , just not a solid laminate below waterline hull! Warren

Just remember... Inexpensive boats usually cost the most......Read that again...

If you’re really really really good at boat systems, I’d snatch it up if the following conditions were met:

1) dry hull below the waterline (yes cored)

2) can move under its own power

It reads as if it needs to be gutted and then a full refit.

Expecting it to price out for sale at a million seems very optimistic. A KK42 that is in fully working condition can be had in the $250s. Even with the twins I wouldn’t expect it to go above $300.

With the criteria above, the real question is capital and commitment. I’d have at least $50-100k on hand to start the refit.

Just my 2 pennies.

(If I didn’t have my 43 Tradewinds and the criterium above was met, I’d bring it to FL and embark on the dream.)

Thanks Bruce, I landed on a listing page and so no KK42 photo so I moved on. Clicking through now it's clearly a 42. The photo posted here with the wood trim gunwales threw me.

This one looks to be a real mess. If you had the time, space and skills it's certainly cheap. But I'd bet someone would be into the boat for far more than it's worth when they are done. I'd rather buy a creampuff 42 for under $300K and go cruising.

good comments guys, defiantly need your eyes wide open here!
I'm sure there is a reserve so at least $75K is what i would expect .
there are plenty of better boats to spend on ,supposedly the interior is ok .
IF you had to have A KK42 this is one way and then all the repairs are your own.
But"If ifs and ands were pots and pans, there'd be no work for tinkers' hands."
Ill let this pass but it was interesting being such an early model.....
if i already owned it, my approach would be very different.
cheers warren

I know this boat. It was berthed at Hartge Yacht Harbor in Galesville, MD for at least four years while we leased there. The owner was asked to move his boat elsewhere. This boat is a mess externally. Awhile back I posted pictures I took to another thread that discussed this boat. If the interior is anything like the exterior, OMG, walk away. I wouldn't take this boat as a gift.

thanks I appreciate the warning , I already decided to not even bother looking at it. (boat is in Deale now)
Besides I'm still confused why in 42 feet there isn't even room for one small guest cabin!
cheers warren

You keep mentioning its a single cabin version.. I thought all KK42's have the small office/cabin with the double single berths.

I have only seen a double berth or V berth in bow ,
Possible berth in pilot house?
Not seen anything else but not expert on KK42 layout
Quick www search I find this
Open to correction
I realize guests could sleep on sofa etc but that gets old very fast unless immediately family!
Cheers Warren

I would think that twins would be less value in this particular boat. And even $100K would probably not do it for a complete refit.
