PT, Cheoy Lee, Marin Yacht Sales ??

Hi All,
I'm a surveyor looking for build details on a boat I'm looking at. For all appearances it looks to be a 1981 PT 38 Europa style single engine trawler. The HIN starts with MYA, which appears as Marin Yacht Sales in California which was simply the importer. The boat was never Documented and any Builders Certificate is long gone. She's titled as a Marin Yacht Sales 38.
The PT 38's appear to mostly have been built by Cheer Men in Kaohsiung. Did any other yards built them?
Does anyone else have a PT 38 with an HIN that starts with MYA?
Interestingly, there is an oval builders plaque at the helm from Cheoy Lee with the correct HIN engraved on it except for the final 12th digit (1). Where this plaque is screwed down however is clearly over where something else (another plaque?) had been secured as evidenced by two different screw holes and a faded rectangle....like something else was screwed down there. Attached is a photo of the profile of the boat, and a photo of what I thought was an interesting detail at the port and starboard corners of the stern rail. Does anyone else have this feature?
Given all the midnight mold swapping back in those days, I would love to know for certain where she was built.

We have a 1985 PT 38 Sedan built by Cheer Men which we have owned for 25 years and our Hin number starts with MYA, yes the boat definitely look like a PT 38. I think it is newer than you think, the only one I have seen with S/S rails, metal window frames and a fibreglass bow pulpit were newer than our unless the owner did some serious upgrades. Our also has a small plaque inside the electrical cabinet on the right hand bulkhead that I stumbled across one day.

Thank you for the prompt reply !! The HIN on the transom of this boat ends in 81 so must assume it's a 1981. That your HIN also starts MYA and is Cheer Men falls into place. If it weren't for the Cheoy Lee placard I don't believe I would have a question. Have you ever come across a PT 38 built by anyone other than Cheer Men?

Our PT-52 was imported by Overseas Yacht Industries (OYI), as also built in the Kaoshing yards.

Tangaroa- props to your handle. I don't believe many know who Tangaroa is (we have a statue onboard)....

Thanks Pau Hana. TANGAROA was the name of our old boat, a 1961 Columbia 29 originally from Los Angeles. Couldn't bring myself to change the name nor could her current owner. I used to joke that I never thought any boat of mine would be a guy, but that boat was definitely a guy.

Yes that makes it a 1981 but boy did someone do a lot of upgrades.....

I was remiss in adressing your earlier comment about the window frames. They are wood on this boat. Hard to tell from that photo. The bow pulpit however is molded FRP.
That said there were hugely significant upgrades to mechanical, electrical and general systems on this boat. It'll be coming on the market soon. I was retained to conduct a pre listing inspection. I'll have the broker post it here when they're ready.

1984 Cheer Men

I am looking at a 84 Cheer Men PT 41 very similar to your pic. This style/builder were never on my radar, but I am becoming a bit more enamoured with the user friendly ergonomics. The upside and downside is the exterior Teak. It needs some love. And of course ongoing love. I'm interested in any more information anyone has.

Sounds like you are happy with yours. Is your layout galley up? I assume at least 2 staterooms. Some pics would be great!

Mine is galley up, which we like. We’ve had galley up and down boats, and we much prefer the galley up. Island bed in the master and bunks in the guest stateroom.

That is sharp. You've knocked it out of thr park. Especially the repower. The one I've been toying with is the single stateroom. A bit of a drawback. My other issue is the teak. Love/hate. I'm not going to rip it off, so hopefully if we get to survey its o.k. The other is the exterior teak needs a refinish. 20 years ago, no biggie. At 64, it's too much work in the water. I would need to have a yard do it. I wouldn't be surprised if that wasn't a 10k job. Perhaps worth it depending on the final acquisition cost.
