All I find on the internet are the reproductions sold as a decorator item. They claim to have a solid brass hub with a keyway. Would these things actually hold up in real usage on a Mainship 36 Motoryacht?
Here is one I found:?
Amazon.com: 18" Ship Wheel Wooden: Pirate Boat Nautical Fishing: Home & Kitchen

If this isn't safe, can anything simple be done to the hub to make it safe?

Where can I buy a real ships wheel?

I dont want any antiques, most I have seen are in pretty bad shape and I dont feel like messing with them.

It's $40, roll the dice. If it works, it will be the cheapest thing you've ever done to the boat!

You can go to about any bar down on the gulf and just snatch one off the wall. Bring your tape and make sure it's going to work.

Try your local marine consignment stores. If you don't have any, we have two. One in Bridgeton called Hurricane Jacks and one in Oriental, called Oriental Marine Consignment. Call them and see what they have!

I have a wooden wheel for sale that is brand new with a SS rim that was covered by a sail maker with elk hide.

Fits Vetus rotary pump , about 20-24 diameter (have to find it) ...$300 .

About what the sail maker would charge for the hide wrap.
