Albin 40 Trawler
I bought a new to me 1986 Albin 40 Trawler and I have it docked in a marina in the Finger Lakes of NY. Ithaca NY on Cayuga Lake to be precise. We love taking it out and going swimming off it as much as we can.

From the day I bought it I have had fellow boaters yell out --- "'Love your boat!" And it seems everyone who goes by the boat now yell out "Beautiful boat!" or "I want a boat just like yours!" Admittedly I have done some bright work, but my feeling is the Trawler is having a "comeback" aesthetically and philosophically and pragmatically.

There is only one other Trawler in our entire Marina of abut 400 slips, however far more than one person has said --- "You've got the best boat in the whole marina."

It's to the point where I have come to expect people to say very nice things about my trawler!!! This could be a "problem"... ;)

It seems to me the trawler is again enjoying a HEYDAY, a new wave of appreciation in 2020.

Anyone else have similar observations?

Nice looking boat ! Lol

We get that a lot whether at home port on the next lake or when cruising. It is refreshing when people express appreciation for classic boat lines instead of the more modern / stylish go fast boats. When up in Canada cruising I've had people that had driven to a near by town that said they had to stop and say they saw us the day before on the water and loved the boat.
I always thank them, smile and just say we love her as well.
I think all things nautical have a certain charm, even to non boaters.

A well kept traditional boat is a thing of beauty. Nice bright work only adds to the allure. Even non boaters can spot a nice looking boat. Enjoy the compliments.

Our boat is on an end tie, with lots paddle boarders and other boaters constantly going past us. We get a lot of the same comments you are getting, but (all modesty aside) we attribute it to people just being nice (at least in the case of our boat, which is great for its purpose (fishing), but not much to look at).

Some admire beauty...

Mines a little rough but looks well travelled...I think the dreamers comment on mine.

Yours has the salty look to draw the same.

We get that quite often too. Lots of trawler lovers out there.

Nice boat! I was born and raised in Ithaca, spent many summers sailing Lasers in Cayuga Lake. Summers in Ithaca on the lake are just wonderful.

Our CHB 41 looks really similar to yours. I’m in a posh marina filled with modern 50-75’ sportfishers and must be one of the lowest value vessels around but we also get lots of compliments - more than our Beneteau First 405 did. I agree the classic trawlers have a romantic and salty aesthetic that people just gravitate to.

I think you misunderstood the comments, people were talking about Stacey!

We thought we were something in our Silverton 40 Aft Cabin.

Then we went to Atlantis and walked the marina.

We were like a carbuncle on the buttock of humanity.

In the PNW, that style has never gone out of style, but i'm glad to hear you are re-establishing the breed.

A friend says, "You can say nice things about my wife, my dog, my truck, but if you want t o make me feel really good, say something nice about my boat."

Prof, post pic if dog. LOL

I get a lot of compliments on AT but I chalk it up to the fact that my boat's hull is British Racing Green, to make it go faster and a white house. SMILE
Most of the other boats, in the marina are white on white.
At least there is not a Pepto Pink or FL Lime Green

I get that a lot as I'm on the transient dock during the summer. Part of it is obviously something unusual compared to the rest on the dock. The other part is how well the boat is kept (pride of ownership).

Trawler owners have directed many admiring glances and comments our way on the rare occasions Frolic is on public display at a marina. I tell them that I was once in their shoes and that their time to be in mine is yet to come. :)

Love Your Boat

I have a 1986 Albin 36 footer. I get the same kind of comments, which is a wonderful affirmation of her design and the hard work to maintain her.

Question for you: Have you had leaks from the windows in the aft cabin? If so, what have you done about it?
Also, any problems with a leak into the anchor locker. I can't find the source.

Yes, mine is forest green also, and gets a lot of admiration, but every time I put a scrape in the Imron, i can't help thinking the "white on white" guys may be right.

My wife and I complement each other all the time about our Tolly! LOL

I've found my boat to draw lots of attention and compliments as well, at least when it's not surrounded by trawlers or anything larger / more classic. Some seem to stem from it being older and still cosmetically in pretty good shape. Others come from the styling, and some from it just not being a typical express cruiser or modern floating luxury bubble.

Yes and yes. I have not 100% positive determined the sources yet but I have some theories and plan to do some ultra low viscosity epoxy injection this weekend and will letyou know on the window sills. as fas as the locker. well mine has NO seal aound the hatch so my assertion is water is definitely going in via space around the hatch. I am making a seal for the hatches.

If you've ever been to Mystic Seaport in Mystic, CT on your boat, you will be given a sign to put on your window that says "Private Yacht, No Boarding." The Seaport restores, preserves and displays antique boats. When visiting there we were awakened by people climbing aboard our boat thinking it was on display. My complaint to the Seaport dockmaster resulted in the origination of the sign they now give to visiting yachts. It was many years ago but great fun to remember.

My family visited and docked at Mystic in early to latter 60's... great place!

Clearly recall walking around in late evening with one of the original hand held transistor AM radios. "Hey There" - Little Red Riding Hood was #2 on the top charts in 66! Met a girl also strolling around. Good memories! :D

I well recall the age old musty-sea odor permeating buildings displaying the previous centuries' whaling industry.

Stopped there again during a road trip with my west coast wife around 2000. She loves it too!!

Thanks Art. Now the damn song is stuck in my head!

Well that’s a big help. Now I have pictures in my head too.

I took out all my windows and replaced with RV windows.

Figured...once and done.

You need to modify boat's window opening or the window insert? What brand window?

Art, STOP IT! LOL

We get the same with our 1980 36’ Grand Banks Classic. As previously stated, it’s all in the time spent on upkeep and maintenance. We get compliments every ware we go, I love my wife, kids, dog, truck, but my GB is my pride and joy. If I could figure out how to upload pics I would share a couple, maybe next time.
